About Vincent

As a history teacher at a school in Racine, WI, there's nothing I like more than to be able to witness a young person learn about something that they never knew existed. To see them expanding their minds by learning this new information is quite an experience. I enjoy making things exciting and relating the potentially complicated topics to the individual in a way that they can understand.

I love being able to see a student grow over the course of time. Comparing where they are now, in terms of their knowledge and mental skills, with where they were months in the past, proves to be quite rewarding and meaningful.

Over the course of my business career, I started to realize that I was much more interested in having the main essence of my job revolve around working with people, rather than having it as a byproduct of the job.  This is why I veered away from business and more toward education.

Interestingly enough, I do not have a bachelor's degree in teaching.  My bachelor's degree is in business management.  Through my 4 years as a business major, I learned very effective communication strategies that allow me to be an impactful teacher, and thorough articulator.  I am currently a 6-8th grade Social Studies teacher at an urban Christian school in Racine, Wisconsin.  I've enjoyed teaching these kids and developing solid relationships with them, and teaching them history.

First, I think it is important to get to know the student on a personal level, to a certain extent.  It can be much easier to relate unknown material to the individual if you know who they are.  I also think it's important for building trust.

When we get into difficult material, and the student isn't understanding it, I think it is important to ask basic questions for the student to answer (as building blocks), and eventually lead up to a coherent understanding of the material through those questions.  It's quite fun.  When that process is undergone, the student will understand the material, and from there it is a matter of repitition and ingraining it into their minds.  Asking these building block questions allows for the student to do the work themself, but it doesn't leave them alone to try and figure it out completely on their own.  That would be like giving someone a foreign language and expecting them to automatically understand it.

Urban teaching has been my main experience, along with working with a child with severe ADHD and Reactive Attachment Disorder, and doing behavioral therapy with kids on the autism spectrum.

A very fond recent event of mine was having a parent of one of my students tell me that she appreciated what I was doing with her children and that I'm doing a good  job.  It's one  thing to have the students tell you they like you, it's another thing to have fellow teachers say they think you're doing well, but it is a totally different ball game when the parent tells you so.
