About Ryan
Hello, my name is Ryan Houssein and I'm currently an Education Studies major at Kingsborough Community College. I plan to transfer to Brooklyn College in the Spring of 2020 to finish my degree in Secondary Education and US History.
I am extremely passionate about education as I believe it gives students the best opportunity to advance their lives. I believe everyone is not only capable of learning, but of being excited about learning. I like to have a dialogue with my students and creat individual lesson plans for each. I feel if I can relate their life experiences to the lesson students become more interested, engaged, and excited about learning.
I love not only teaching and sharing information, I love learning from my students. Everyone has their own life experiences and perspectives that they can bring to every subject and the job of a teacher isn't to just teach your world view. The job is discuss the subject matter and relate it to the students and the only way to do this is to engage them and learn how they think and feel about issues. Learning from students helps the teacher to create better lesson plans and have a more well rounded educational philsophy. Education is so important and I am thrilled to be working in the field.
When I started going to college I gained a passion for education that I had never felt before in high school. I knew then that I wanted to teach and to share information.
I am a New York State certified Teaching Assistant. My course/field work from being an Education Studies major. I work as a test proctor and tutor for A-List Education. I've also done private tutoring in the past between 1st and 12th grade.

First, I review the materials they need help with. I take the time to thoroughly understand the subject matter so that once I sit down with a student I have a firm grasp of the material. The first lesson I like to get to know the student, ask some questions, find their interests, dislikes, see where they are coming from, and what their perspectives are. Then I use this information to create a lesson plan that I believe will work best with the individual I am teaching.
I've tutored students ranging from 1st grade through 12th grade.
Choose someone you feel comfortable with. Look for teachers who are excited about what they are teaching and who want to engage with you and learn about you and learn from you. Don't accept teachers who think of you as a job, they are no good.
A student was feeling very stressed about an upcoming SAT test. They were feeling down on themselves as if they weren't good enough. He stayed after class to talk to me and ask questions. I related my life story to his. I mentioned I felt the same way in high school, felt I wasn't smart enough to pass tests, didn't think I'd be able to go to college. I helped him see these anxious feelings are normal, but the way to combat them is to work hard, study, and allow yourself to make mistakes. Don't get hung up on mistakes, use them to learn, learn your weaknesses and work to improve them. The student came up to me at a later class and thanked me for taking the time to speak to him, and for telling him about my experiences. It helped him feel like he wasn't alone in his feelings of stress. He said he knows his weaknesses and is trying to not get down about them, but taking the time to try to understand them and how to improve. It made me feel good to know that in this little way I was able to make someone feel better about themselves, and rather than getting frustrated or anger and giving up, to see them focusing and trying harder.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Is this person passionate? Do they actually care if I succeed? Are they flexible? Are they willing to work with me as an individual?

I try to charge $15 an hour, but I am flexible. I like to keep my rates reasonable as everyone should have access to a tutor regardless of income.
