About Steve

Hi, I'm Steven, and I have been tutoring English as a Second Language (ESL) for over 20 years. I love to teach using many fun ways of remembering new words and phrases. I also really like to teach actual spoken American English, and I have developed my own curriculum that I have made using my own fun cartoon drawings and songs.

Because I grew up in Asia, and spoke two languages all of my life (English and Japanese), I know the feeling of learning and remembering different languages. I also speak some Spanish, so that can be helpful sometimes though it is much more basic than my Japanese language abilities.

Because of that ability, I had my tutoring business in Dallas, Texas for 16 years (with over 300 students total from different countries), and also taught Japanese languge at a community college there. My students were very happy to study with a teacher who enjoys his work so much, and teaches in a happy, playful style.

The part I enjoy most about my work is... The very big joy I get from seeing my students begin to understand, and find joy in speaking, using their new language ability that I have helped them to master!

Having grown up in Japan (since age 3), my world was a very unique one.  My social life was mostly Japanese, and my education was entirely in English. This gave me a unique experience of being very much bi-cultural and bilingual.  So it was a natural fit for me to begin tutoring English as a Second language as early as age 16.  So I did this part time work throughout my high school days (and past...until age 19). And then I went back to Japan after college and taught part-time again for a couple more years as a young adult.  Then, a few years later, when marrying and settling down, I decided to launch the tutoring business to serve the many Japanese families who were living in the US in the metro area close to me because of the father's 3 to 5 year work assignment in the US.  Because of my language abilities, I was very welcomed in that community, and feel that I was able to help many of them.  Because of my abilities and students' recommendations of my services, at least 2/3 of my clients were Japanese.  But I also taught people from many other countries as well.  Due to the nature of my very visual curriculum, I felt that I could teach people from any country. It wasn't a requirement that I speak their language, and I felt that I was able to help many of them master spoken American English much more than they would have in most school and business settings.

Although my education is not in this area of interest, I have been teaching English as a Second Language since my own High School days (over 40 years ago now) living in Japan with my family.  Then I continued my teaching English as a Second Language with my tutoring and translation business in Dallas, TX for 16 years (until 2007).  I taught over 300 students--mostly one-on-one during that time.  I had a very unique opportunity to pursue my musical career at that time, and so decided to follow that...which I continue to pursue till this day.  I have many followers online on that pathway, but have not yet begun to establish much of an online presence with the language work during that time, but I'm now hoping to better integrate my two life-loves (of language and music) and careers...so that's why I'm offering my services and expertise here now.

I like to make sure I have assessed both your actual comprehenion ("hearing") and speaking levels as accurately as possible...so as to develop my lessons to adapt to your specific needs as quickly and as effectively as I can.  Then I develop a lesson plan tailor-made for you.  I have so many unique ways and approaches to helping with focusing on different areas for improvement.

Most of my teaching methods involve my hundreds of cartoon drawings...and I often create more "in class"...to help express the many different meanings of words and phrases.  I also often developed unique songs as a way to increase vocabulary and remember whole worlds of new words...quickly.  As part of this process, I developed over 200 games (table games, card games...Many can be adapted for online use.) that were often "tweaked" together with me by many of my students who also gave me many helpful and creative ideas...as we played them and improved them together. Some were focused on conversation, some on spelling, some on writing. Some could be adapted to dozens of applications.

Details

For online lessons, I do charge $20 per hour for standard one-hour lessons...or if we feel that more in-depth lessons will be helpful for faster progress, sometimes I may give the option for an hour and a half lesson...for $27.  Sometimes, for a younger student...I may suggest having a 45 min. lesson.  This can be done for $16 per lesson.  (Of course, these prices are much less than what I used to charge when I had my tutoring business...when doing the tutoring in each student's home.  I will also likely charge more once I have established more of an online following, so now is a good chance to get a very good value at a very good price...from someone who has many years of experience teaching this challenging language, and likes to do it in a most playful and upbeat, fun way.)
