About William

I teach English. I attended Middlebury College for my undergraduate degree. A few sessions with me and your child will be well on their way to writing like a Middlebury Alumnus.

I provide my services online. Students will read short fiction, use context clues to accrue new vocabulary, and write short essays about said stories. Students will understand tone, theme, topic, symbolism, character development, and some basic literary theory.

I am willing to tutor during the school year but will need to find time to schedule that once the year begins.

I love literature and I love working with kids and I love spreading my enthusiasm for reading.

I am a certified English teacher, grades 5-12, who currently works in the Worcester Public Schools. I graduated from Middlebury College with a Bachelor's Degree in English Literature and Film Studies, and from Clark University with a Master's Degree in Teaching.

About the lesson

Students will read "The Two Brothers" by Leo Tolstoy and write an essay arguiing which brother they think made the right decision using evidence from the text. From there, I will assess their reading and writing needs and form a reading/discussion/writing heavy curriculum where we will read short fiction, discuss the stories, and write, focusing on thesis creation and defense.

The sessions themselves will be heavy with work. Students will not have more than half an hour of independent work, likely reading, to complete on their own, and even that won't be commonplace. It's the summer and I'm no sadist, and since lessons are one on one, we will be very productive in our time together, so there will be little need for homework.

Mostly middle school and high school students from varying backgrounds. I will be SEI Endorsed by the end of June.

Don't try to sound smart when you write. Words don't make you smart, but ideas do. Focus on what you are tyring to say (your thesis) and how you want to defend it (your body paragraphs) and try to be straightforward.

And read. Read as much as you can anything you can find just a touch above your reading level. The better you are at reading, the better you will become at writing, and thinking.

While reading The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by CS Lewis, one of my students was very sad when Aslan dies, but then got super stoked when he came back to life. At the end of the book, he asked if there were more Narnia books to read. This student was not someone fond of reading on his own. He's read another three of the Narnia books since we finished LWW in April.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should understand what it is they are looking to fix. What are your needs? Can the teacher assess your needs quickly and form a curriculum to address these needs?

Details

I'm flexible with pricing, but I do think $35-40 an hour is reasonable for the work we will do. That being said, I'm doing this to stay focused over the summer and make a few bucks doing something I love, so I am open to negotiations.
