About Toni

Each child learns differently, and I use many techniques to gauge where students are academically, emotionally and socially, so as to plan where we can go from there. Using a personal, creative approach, I have seen incredible growth in reading, writing and math in even the most hesitant students. I have a Masters Degree in Teaching, and have taught Pre K - 8th grade as a substitute teacher in several local districts. I have held long-term positions in first and second grades and taught first grade through distance learning this past spring when schools closed. Wow-- what a learning curve for all of us! I am a very relational teacher; I love finding out what my students enjoy, and using some of that personal and cultural information to create lessons. Most children love talking about themselves and the people, animals, and special things in their lives. I encourage this! I love to laugh, and use humor a lot in my classroom.

The reactions I receive from students-- whether they are really enjoying a classroom activity, or excited that they read a page of a book with no help-- is what brings me joy in teaching. I love seeing childrens' confidence grow as they engage in lessons, be it understanding how subtraction works, increasing their fluency while reading, or presenting a piece of written work in front of their classmates. When I witness their joy, my own increases exponentially!

About the lesson

First I would find some things out about the student-- what they like about school, what their hobbies are, what they like to read, or perhaps why reading doesn't interest them. I would find out what the curriculum was in their classroom and how they felt about it; what was challenging or successful for them?Giving them a few fun assignments could help me assess where they are at academically. I would get parental input, and make sure there is clarity of expectations. Students will engage more intensely if the lessons are applicable to them personally. When tutoring one-on-one, there is so much room to stylize lessons for each learner.
