About Nicole

I want you to learn, excel, and succeed. I became a certified special and general education teacher after retiring from the Air Force at the rank of lieutenant colonel. My last positions in the Air Force included working on the Joint Staff as an intermediary between senior defense officials from other countries and our own staff followed by three years at the Naval Academy where I taught naval officer candidates and foreign nationals about the U.S. government, military ethics, and leadership. I have taught public school at the elementary and middle school levels for three years now working with students with emotional and behavioral challenges. Previously, I also have also tutored elementary through high school students, served as a homeschool tutor, and homeschooled three of my children.

I have a bachelor of science degree, a minor in Spanish, two master's degrees in human development focused on adult education and national security affairs focused on East Asia, and I am 6 credits away from another master's in leadership in teaching. I believe in lifelong learning, and I know you can learn anything if you put your mind to it.

I have taught throughout my Air Force career and now do it full time.  I've worked in summer extension programs, church settings, as a lead trainer and professional development manager.  Teaching and learning have always been my passion.

I have 3 years of special education experience, the goal of which is to tailor education programs to the learner.  I have taken courses in reading acquisition, assessment, and curriculum.  I also have written an extensive amount of professional and academic papers for my military and education careers and several degree programs.

I like to do an assessment which includes

- strengths and weaknesses

- goal of the assignment or tutoring

- mutual identification of specific objectivesfor the session(s)

I've worked with students studying for college entrance or career entrance exams, elementary students needing to improve foundational skills, college students taking core courses, and high school and middle school students in a wide array of subjects.

Your teacher should be able to explain things in a manner that interests you and works from your strengths.  You should have a common vision of what success looks like.

I worked with a student in emotional crisis who was having difficulty staying focused in the classroom.  After talking with him, we wrote down some goals to help him stay focused and keep him out of trouble.  Now, he makes a special effort to stop by my classroom where I praise him for good behavior, we review positive steps, and he continues to improve.  We developed a rapport.  Now that he trusts me, we can address other academic issues he has.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What do I do well?

How can I apply my strengths to my challenges?

What kind of tutor do I need: a motivator, an instructor, or a mixture of both?
