About Amy
My 8th grade English teacher recommended me to the counselor as a strong candidate for the school's peer tutoring program. I also later became an English TA.
I'm a straight-A high school junior with peer and elementary tutoring experience. I was part of my middle school's after school program as an english and social science tutor and began tutoring independently as a freshman in high school.
I also teach taekwondo and piano, so I have experience working with a variety of children within an age range of 4-15.
Because I have taken AP World History, AP Chemistry, and AP English literature, I am most comfortable tutoring general history, chemistry, and (especially) english. However, I am also able to teach elementary math and basic algebra/geometry.

I first want to get to know the student by asking them about what studying methods they've found useful (or the ones they found unhelpful), what subjects/concepts they are good at and the ones they want to improve on, and their general interests and hobbies to better understand them as a person.
This helps me figure out a more individualized and effective lesson plan for each student.
When teaching taekwondo and piano, I work with students anywhere from 4-14 years old. As an academic tutor, most of my students are in middle school.
Find a teacher who is encouraging and who is easy to talk to. If you don't feel comfortable talking to your teacher, they are not the right teacher for you, no matter how impressive their academic record may be. Just because a teacher seems to have a lot of knowledge doens't mean that they are the best at explaining that knowledge. Teachers should be flexible and willing to make the effort to meet your needs to the best of their ability.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should ask themselves:
What do I understand about this topic?
What don't I understand about this topic?
How do I learn best? (through lectures/notes, flashcards, etc.)
What am I interested in learning?
What are my strengths as a student?
What are my weaknesses as a student?
Recommendations

She's so friendly and patient! My english grade improved so much because of all of the essay help she gave me :)
I was initially a bit hesitant about hiring her because she was only a high school student, but I'm so glad that I decided to give her a chance. My 6th grade daughter wasn't fond of her previous two tutors, so I thought it would be more comfortable for her to be taught by someone closer to her own age. She has always struggled with reading and writing, and I can't believe how quickly Amy helped her improve! Not only has her english grade gotten better, she actually seems to be starting to enjoy the subject! I couldn't have asked for more out of a tutor.
Explains things very thoroughly and helped me understand a lot of chem concepts I didn't know. I don't think I could have aced my final without her
She's so friendly and patient! I was really struggling with writing essays, but she was so helpful. I raised my grade from a low B to an A after about a month with her, and even though I don't need tutoring anymore, I still ask her for tips sometimes :)
