About Kristin

I have been a high school English teacher for 11 years. I have taught 9-12 and everything from ESL and struggling readers to honors. I love when students find something about English to enjoy when they previously hated everything. Whether it is writing stories or reading a book.

AZ Certified English Language Arts teacher for grades 6-12

I began as an AVID tutor, then did my teaching internships and student teaching. I granduated in December 2010 so for the spring of 2011 I substitute taught in several grades and subjects, but middle and high school were my favorite. I was hired for the 2011-12 school year to teach 9th grade English. I learned a lot in theirs first few years that have helped me to develop into the teacher I am today.

About the lesson

Talking with them to find out their interests and their struggles. Building rapport with them is the most important element of learning.

I have worked with students who are learning English as a second language who are considered intermediate, meaning they are close to proficient.

I have also worked with students who were struggling readers, 2-4 levels below grade level. They were 9th graders so their reading level ranges from 5th-7th grade

I have also taught honors, 9th and 10th grade.

I have spent the most time with the average student who can be below grade level, on grade level, or above grade level.

I have worked with students of many different abilities and needs adapting to make the curriculum accessible to them

Be specific with what you need help with, English has many areas that are covered. Do you need help understanding a story or article? Do you need help identifying and analyzing theme? Do you need help revising your essay?

Have an open mind and growth mindset. Instead of "I can't read," say, "I am struggling with comprehension right now."

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What is it specifically you are struggling with. Are you being asked to answer questions where you need to indentify information in the text, but you don't remember it? Or are you being asked to infer and analyze and you are struggling to understand what the question is asking you to do?
