About Christy

History has long been considered a boring topic which makes it that much harder to remember the names and dates associated with people you care nothing about. However, making history come alive not only makes it more interesting, it makes remembering the lives and stories of our ancestors so much easier. Let me help you see history in a whole new way while learning at the same time.

I hold a Master's Degree in American History and a Bachelor's Degree in Education Studies. I am a mother of three and a substitute teacher so navigating K-12 and college level courses in History and English is second nature to me. I love to help others learn and am well versed in helping those who struggle with ADHD (as well as some other learning disabilities) find new ways to learn, ways that compliment their learning style. Seeing someone's eyes light up when they finally understand a concept that has eluded them is one of my favorite things in the world.

I grew up with undiagnosed ADD. I don't learn in the same way other students do so I tended to slack off in class. I knew I was smart but thought I was stupid because I just couldn't seem to keep up in class like the other kids. I went to college at 18, like most kids do, but dropped out after my first semester beause I failed my History class; I just couldn't pay attention to the boring lectures so ended up failing the tests. In my early 20s I was diagnosed with ADD and went on a journey to understand my way of learning. After learning how to work with, and sometimes against, the ADD I went on to earn a Bachelor's Degree in Education and a Master's Degree in American History. Through my own struggles I developed a passion for helping others understand their learning style so they can become life long learners too.

About the lesson

The first thing I like to do with new students is get to know a little bit more about them. You can learn a lot about a student's learning style by understanding who they are as a person. Once I know them a bit better we will look into their areas of struggle so we can come with a plan together to work towards a better way of learning. Not every student learns in the same way so finding a way to reach each student is not only vital in helping them learn in school it will help them learn throughout their entire life.

I have worked with students in grades K-12 as well as college students. I focus on History and English in grades 7-12 and at the college level but am able to work with students in all subjects in sixth grade and under.

When hiring a person to help you learn history make sure that person is passionate about history. If a teacher is not passionate about history it just becomes another boring class. In order to really understand and learn history it's important for a history teacher to make history come alive. Learning about history is not just about memorizing names, dates, and facts, it's about understanding the life someone lived.

I was recently helping a 7th grader in his math class. He was convinced he couldn't do the work so had been slacking off for awhile. He was to take an online quiz in his math class and in this app the kids in the entire grade are graded and ranked. He was convinced he woudn't do well but I knew better. I sat with him while he took the quiz, made sure he was reading the questions fully, helped him think through the questions fully instead of skimming through them and guessing at answers, I made him take his time and by the end of the quiz he ranked in the top ten in his entire class pulling entirely from his own knowledge. Seeing his eyes light up and hearing him say "I've NEVER gotten that high before!" is something I cherish. Seeing a person start to believe in their ability to figure out problems and learn something new is why I do what I do.
