About Camryn

Hi students! My name is Camryn Bazán and I'm an honors path UCLA art history undergraduate with an AA in studio arts. A fun fact is I hope to attend graduate school with a focus in Korean art history! I have deep interest and knowledge in all forms of history and art history with major focus in Europe and East and South Asia. Artistically, I also went to an art high school and developed with my AA a focus in drawing with graphite and charcoal along with painting with acrylics. I have major skills in research and writing as well, a personal passion of mine being reading and writing academic papers in my free time. I hope I can help you in your art, history, and writing needs!

I have a deep passion for the arts and always have since I was a child. I didn't realize my love of art history till I took courses at my local community college and ever since then my academic and artistic world have collided in the best way possible! I have studied multiple areas such as ancient to contemporary European/Western art, European/Western political art, as well as ancient to contemporary Chinese art, contemporary South Asian art, and ancient to contemporary Japanese art. For application in the real world, I worked as an assistant archivist and researcher at a political graphics archival center for a 10 week intensive internship where I conducted an 80 hour research project of testing flattening methods with posters of varying age, material, and printing methods. I have worked with children grades 1st through 5th for 5 years, garnering over 500 hours, as a volunteer seasonal lead set painter and designer for a theather program at an elementary school in Walnut Creek where I taught kids and volunteer parents how to paint both a wall mural and paint detail on set pieces. I am a for commission artist as well, working on pieces from portraits of humans to dogs, landscapes, even graphic design. Art for me is for everyone, whether as a relief for stress or as a potential career. There's something for everyone whether they know it yet or not and I'd like to help people discover just what there is for them!

I will soon be a senior at UCLA as an undergraduate art history major and I am following the high honors path meaning I have kept above a 3.85. Currently, I have always kept an academic 4.0. I already possess an AA in studio arts, graduating from DVC in 2021. My internship at the political graphics center and volunteer work have given me great insight into both the needs of children when teaching as well as applying my academic skills to a field of interest in archival studies.

About the lesson

Well, matters on the student! I of course first like to do introductions, learn what the student finds interesting and make sure they feel comfortable enough to speak their thoughts and ideas from the start. For art, if the student is young or a complete beginner I like to start with some excercises, practicing basic 2D shapes and line control before graduating to 3D shapes and concepts like patterns, texture, density, etc. For art history as well as normal history, I want to hear from the student just where they are currently in their curriculum to give me a starting point for future lessons onward as well as look at their comprehension of the material to that point. From there we would go over basic points, major events, major figures, and if learning art history apply this knowledge with culture of the people from where we are studying to the artworks that have become major symbolic pieces or demonstrate milestones in artistic movements and artists lives. For writing, I like to give them a couple minutes to write out an introduction to me and what they enjoy most or if they have available a past assignment they are proud of, I want them to read it to me to assess aesoects such as level of word choice to writing rhythm. Always, the comfort of the student comes first though.

I have worked primarily with 1st through 5th grade but have experience as well tutoring 6th-10th grade students. I have no issues with any age or academic level from k-12 though. Students have ranged from high arts skills and low STEM to high STEM minded and low art drive. Disabilities such as ADHD or say sight impairment never phase me, I've seen them all before and through personal experience have well known how to approach these cases.

Be open minded. Especially for the arts and art history, you'll find that the world is vastly more interconnected than you realize. People view art in a binary way, that it's a timeline starting with ancient cave paintings, a mingle moment in the Renaissance, and continue into contemporary with Jackson Pollock. It's more like a spiderweb. All reaches of life connects to one another whether to be through techniques or technology, agency or media. Never take things as a straight line when it comes to the arts, because every question can be answered in as many ways as there are people.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should think "what am I truly worried or confused about?" We can't help you if we don't know what's on your mind so being honest with your questions is very important. Also, consider the question "Am I interested by this?", because it will only benefit you more to be genuinely happy when learning about a subject.
