About Jack

I work not just to improve writing but to improve writers. While I work with students to improve the piece of writing at hand, I also work to leave them with skills that they can implement in all future writing. I am CRLA I certified and I have been working as a writing tutor for one year at two different universities. I have tutored students ranging from college freshmen to Master's students. I love working with students from diverse backgrounds, including English Language Learners, international students, and disabled students.

I was selected for a writing tutor position at the first university I attended based on writing samples. While there, I discovered I had a passion for producing better writing and writers. When I transferred schools I did not want to give up my work as a tutor so I applied to work in the writing center and was hired. Prior to college, I worked as a counsellor for international students and taught cross-cultural communication.

I am CRLA I certified and have taken the class "Methods of Teaching Writing Across the Curriculum." Additionally, I have completed writing tutor training at two universities and I have tutored more than 150 hours.

About the lesson

I begin by getting to know the student and their goals. I ask the student to describe their assignment in their own words. Next, I read their writing out loud and provide commentary as I read. When I arrive at something I feel should change, I will usually ask the student to brainstorm ideas to better achieve their purpose for writing, providing suggestions if needed. Finally, I proofread with the student or give them things to work on before the next session.

I have tutored English Language Learners, international students, and disabled students. I work primarily with college students but have also worked with high school students.

Make sure that you find somebody you feel comfortable around! Writing is an inherently personal process and you want to find a tutor that you can trust with work that you invest so much of your self and time in.

While working with a regular tutee of mine recently, I was about to open my mouth and suggest a change to a sentence when she beat me to it. She demonstrated that she had learned from previous mistakes and actually grown as a writer from our sessions. It's so fulfilling to see growth in action!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Think about the reason you are writing what you are writing. Whether it's an essay for class or an application to college, every piece of writing has an audience and when you identify that to me, I can begin to tell you how to write for them. Also consider whether you want to meet regularly or only when you need help on something specific.

Details

If I have to travel to you, I charge $20 per half hour or $30 per hour. If you travel to me or we work online, I charge $15 per half hour or $20 per hour. These costs are subject to change and I may charge less or more depending on travel distance. The first session pricing is set at a flat rate of $15/hour as I will spend the first hour getting to know you and your writing goals.
