About Hillary

I am passionate about reading, writing, and critical thinking. Reading, writing, and critical thinking skills make you a better communicator and a more successful student and/or worker, no matter what you study or where you work!

I offer tutoring in all areas of English for all grade levels. I can help children, teens, and adults with reading comprehension, academic writing, vocabulary, spelling, speaking, listening, and grammar. I have a Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Second Language from Northern Arizona University and three years of teaching experience as a writing teacher. I have certificates in Literature and Linguistics and have studied the grammar of the English language extensively. I have published and given several academic conference presentations about the teaching of English.

I enjoy watching students grow and succeed. The biggest reward a teacher/tutor can have is when their student realizes that they have learned something and improved their skills in a certain area.

I started teaching part time while I was working on my Master's degree. I continued to teach full time after I graduated until my partner and I moved to Denver.

I have a Bachelor of Arts in English with certificates in Literature and Linguistics. I also have a Master of Arts in Teaching ESL. I have three years of teaching experience at Northern Arizona University, where I taught various composition classes and tutored at the University Writing Center.

About the lesson

I like to get to know students first and learn what their goals and expectations for tutoring are. If working with a younger student, I like to discuss goals and expectations with parents. We will begin by putting those goals in writing and working together to find out how we can incorporate students' interests into each tutoring session.

I have worked with all types of students. I have mostly taught university freshmen, both native English speakers and non-native English speakers. I have worked with first-generation college students, veterans, international students, and Spanish-speaking students. I have also tutored elementary and high school students.
