About Joey

Hey!

I'm an experienced drummer with ~10 years of performance under my belt. Young and able to relate with any age group, with experience teaching from ages 7-50. I've studied a melange of genres, from jazz and funk to afrocuban and hip-hop, and can teach both music performance as well as theory (that includes reading music!). Also able to teach to adept level with piano, beginner guitar and bass, and vocal training.

Its music. Its the most beautiful thing humanity has created. I'm currently studying to become a professor, as teaching is a passion of mine, as is learning. And I believe that I learn something from each student I teach.

I was originally part of this music program, School of Rock. By age 16, they asked me to start teaching lessons. This included private lessons, and co-directing "bands" made up of about 10 students, rehearsing once a week, and then playing a show every 6 months. Gradually, taught more and more, and by 18 was giving lessons to those aged 7-50.

Formal drum lessons for about 8 years, jazz training for about 4, but most importantly, *experience*! Live music, and playing with other musicians, is in my opinion the most crucial part of being a musician.

About the lesson

Figure out the amount of the musical knowledge the student has, and then figure out their goals for music. Organize methods from there.

All across the board! Those who have never picked up drum sticks (or any musical instrument) to borderline experts. There's always something to learn from anybody :)

Have forethought of your musical goals! A good teacher will be able to organize lessons that are tailored to you - not giving students exercises that last the alloted time.

At a recent show, performing at the Lake Worth Street Painting Festival, a man approached the band afterwards and, although the slots were already filled, invited us to play at this festival he puts on in North Carolina every year. Right place, right time 😁

I try to charge pretty standard lesson prices, $20 on the half hour. Can be flexible if necessary!
