About Michael

I am grateful for all my mentors who helped shape my career as a musician, as well as their insight on life and professionalism. That is why I look to share my expertise with the community that invested in me.

San Diego born and raised, Principal Percussionist of San Diego State University, Drum Captain of SDSU Marching Aztecs, and an alumnus of the 2019 Boston Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps. With extensive experience in the concert, marching, drumset, and electronic world, I look to present lessons from a wide perspective on musicianship, professionalism, and how to stand out as a performer.

Music is such a vast topic, and each student has vastly different goals from another. From audition prep, to garage band drumming, to that one piece you've always wanted to learn but never thought you could. YOU CAN! No matter what the goal is, now is always the best time to activate your musical journey!

I get to surround myself every day with people who love music, and are eager to improve. It's exactly the way I am, and as an educator and student at the same time, I have a great deal of empathy for my students.

As a performer, there is nothing like the last note. Your mind has gone blank for the past 6 minutes and suddenly you look up and see a crowd, big or small, with gleaming eyes from the art you just threw into the world. No words have to be spoken, everyone just gets to revel and appreciate the beauty of the sound we wish would never go away.

When I was in 8th grade, I joined percussion ensemble as a "mini-elective" during lunch, where I helped lead conversations about percussion technique and arranging for a group of only percussionists.

Simultaneously, I joined the high school marching band a year early to have the opportunity to perform with my older brother. This gave me the experience to immediately give back and help my teach my fellow classmates about the marching world.

Over 20 years of honing my craft as a percussionist, a decade of marching band experience, multiple honors/awards for leadership management and performance, and an absolute love for all genres of music.

About the lesson

In the first lesson, we will start by discussing simply what we like about music, and get our minds honed in on 1-3 primary focuses to target. Then, we will begin to map out a few strategies in regards to technique, how to listen to music more intently, and the methods I keep coming back to every day of my own practicing.

As a professional performer, educator, and entrepreneur, I meet an amazing variety of aspiring musicians. I teach multiple high school percussion classes during the week, and have taught students ranging from 15-24. Although my specialty is audition/college prep for incoming freshmen and transfer students, I would love to help students of all ages grow and achieve their goals as a musician.

1. Find a teacher who you connect with. Your teacher should leave you each lesson with a clear plan, and a motivation to grow, rather than you feeling sluggishly defeated. Having good conversation and sharing a love for music is key.

2. Find a teacher who is constantly looking to improve themselves. It's one thing to have experience. It's an even better thing to have guidance from someone who is also in the student mindset, eager to learn and grow. I learn something new from each and every one of my students.

3. Find a teacher who can be adaptable. When a strategy doesn't work, try something else! A great teacher will continually search for those golden nuggets of info that shape your overall understanding of the craft from multiple perspectives.

One of my students just got accepted to the University of their choice after working with me for about 9 months. Seeing his excitement from the news was just so awesome, and energizes me to continue on my path as a lifelong educator.
