About Robb

With over 20 years of experience, I've traveled the world and recorded several albums with as many bands and groups. I was coached as a drummer and guitarist at the Armed Forces School of Music in 2007 and again in 2011, learning from some of the best and brightest musicians the world has to offer. From 2007-2013 I toured the United States and Europe as the primary drummer, guitarist, lead singer, and sound engineer for the legendary 451st Army Band, performing for President George Bush at the White Houses and opening for acts such as Craig Morgan, Garth Brooks, and 311.

I currently reside in Minneapolis and work with jazz combos, electronic dream pop, and psych rock bands. I am always learning myself, pushing myself into new styles and genres. I proudly play Meinl Cymbals and Twin Cities Drum Collective Drums.

My approach to teaching is to give my students the fundamentals they need to be productive, gigging musicians in the scene and to teach them what they need to be not only be great drummers, but successful musicians.

Music has been the cornerstone of my existence since I was old enough to plunk scales on my mother's piano. Ever since then, I've worked relentlessly to pursue my passion for drumming, guitar, singing, bass, and basically figuring out anyway to be involved in the scene whether it's gigging, running sound, techning for my friends, or working behind the scenes to manage bands and social media.

I began teaching at 18, right away with my high school marching band and drum line, then in my 20s teaching younger elementary students, prepping them for concert band, and now in my later 20s, proper drumset students.

I have taught drum lessons for years including jazz drumset, concert band percussion, and drumline techniques including snare playing, bass line, tenor, cymbal, and even marching styles. I've even instructed in setting up live sound and recording techniques from drums and drumming.

About the lesson

My process starts with the very basics of drumming as well as the fundamentals of the instrument such as how to set up your kit ergonomically, how to tune heads, how to set up the bass and hihat pedal, and even proper maintenence and care.

Then we always move forward with identifying a few key things about the student namely their strengths and weaknesses behind the kit as well as their anticipated creative direction. I want my drummers to be able to reach their tangible goals and be productive musicians in their communities.

All kinds! Young, old, new, seasoned. I can offer something to everyone.

Find a drum teacher that will work to help you with your goals, whatever they may be. If you don't get the sense that your teacher is vibing with you, change teachers.

I always love playing jazz in St Paul, especially at Black Dog Cafe with my group Jiselle McCollums' Jazz Cult.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Think carefully about what your goals as a drummer and a musician are. Do you want to be a technical metalcore master like Marco Minnemann? Do you want the feel and finesse of Brian Blade? Do you need the expert technique to take your drumline to the championships? Do you really want to take a Tichelli piece to the next level in your concert band?
