About Rick

Rick Urban has been teaching Drum Set and Percussion professionally for over 17 years. Formerly he was the drummer for "Standby Radio" and he has played drumset on countless studio recordings. He toured Germany with the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in 2007. More recently he has been doing studio work for Film/Television music. He is also currently an active orchestal performer with the Miami Symphony Orchestra. Rick's teaching style is influenced by his former teachers at The New England Conservatory of Music, the University of Miami, and the DePaul University Music school. Rick is currently the Percussion and Drumset instructor at Miami-Dade College and can design your drum lesson experience to meet your individual needs, whether you are are aspiring to become prefessional or just want to learn drums for fun. Rick's drumming can be heard on all "Standby Radio" songs currently streaming on all platforms, and on television/film production music that is aired all over the world.

I began teaching drum lessons as a member of the Boston Philharmonic and the youth program in the New England Conservatory. After that I began to teach at multiple schools in the Chicago-area. Several years ago, I became the Drumset and Percussion instructor at Miami-Dade College where I currently teach.

I have a Master's Degree in music performance from The New England Conservatory of music as well and additional drum set studies at the University of Miami's Frost School of Music. My Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance is from Depaul University's School of Music. I also have a Master's Degree in Music composition from Columbia College and Master's Degree in Music production from the University of Miami's Frost School of Music.

About the lesson

If the student has experience I listen to them play and diagnose strengths and weaknesses. I also spend a lot of time talking with the studentt to determine what they enjoy playing and what they want to get better at playing. For first time students I introduce them to the drums and have a step-by-step process to quickly gain results. This includes breaking down a particular beat in to its different parts.

Over my 17 year career as a teacher I have worked with every age group from 5th grade to adult. I have worked with absolute beginners and professional and advanced college players.

Online lessons are almost to the point of being better than in person lessons, when you consider the ease of screen sharing. I often will be able to show a musical example with in seconds that will become eye-opening to a student. You can have trust that I have 17 years of experience and have taught every type of student and I know how to create a curriculum that will teach the student a lot, but will also create the oppurtunity to have fun!

Recently I played with the Miam Symphony in a performance attended by Gloria and Emelio Estefan at the Palm Court in Miami's Design district. We also have recently featured a song written for the orchestra by Emilio Estefan. On Drumset I recently recorded an album of funk songs that have been featured on tv shows all around the world, including "The Voice" and "My Kitchen Rules" in Austalia.
