About Zachary

Music can be a very powerful thing. For young students, it can be a gateway to college and scholarships and for adults, it can be a way to relieve stress in a fun and rewarding way. Whether you are old or young the dedication and structure that learning an instrument provides can make life seem a little more manageable. I have been playing percussion and working as a freelance audio engineer for 20 years. Working in the commercial audio field with such companies as Underarmor and Toyota, I have learned how to create a complete project from start to finish and have it ready for submission. I can teach you how to create great sounding audio tracks that pop and are commercial worthy without thousands of dollars worth of equipment and software. Hope to see you in the studio!

I love sharing music with others. I think having fun while learning is the key to getting the most out of a session. The best part of music is how it brings people of all races and creeds together and I hope to share this experience with your child!

My Uncle Taso is an advanced percussion teacher who is my idol and has performed live throughout the country and on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon with his band Jesse and the Rippers from tv's Full House fame. He gave me the idea to share my knowledge with beginners percussionists and budding hip-hop and electronic talents.

I have been playing percussion and working in the freelance recording arena for over 20 years. I was heavily influenced by my family which has 5 other professional musicians as well as myself. Since school, I have been involved in music as the Drummer for our Choir program and have played live percussion around Maryland with several groups. I also have been a successful commercial producer working with Underarmour and Toyota. I have produced four albums in the hip-hop and electronic genres while working with many different artists.

About the lesson

A typical first lesson with me begins with a short interview to find out what the student is hoping to achieve through our lessons. Next, I usually have them play for me to see where they stand in experience level. Then I will outline the lesson plan and create a set of goals for us to accomplish during our time together. I usually begin with very simple rudiments and show them how to correctly practice and set a practice schedule that I think will benefit them the most. Then at the end of the lesson, we will find a song that they love and I will show them how to practice the rudiments in time with their favorite song. I feel this makes practicing much easier and way more fun. Usually, the first lesson will incorporate the least amount of musical instruction because it is most important for us to create a bond as teacher and student quickly so they begin to trust me.

I would say the most important thing is matching your skill level with the appropriate teacher. You want to match yourself with the person because the connection between student and teacher is very important. A strong bond can influence the amount of practice and the success of the lessons. Many musicians often attribute their success to their teachers and maintain a long-lasting friendship with them.
