About Evan

Evan Yester is a 2016 graduate of California University of Pennsylvania where he received his Bachelor's degree in Commercial Music Technology. While at Cal U, he studied under Pittsburgh Ballet percussionist Jan Fung and played in many university bands and ensembles including Marching Band, Jazz Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Concert Band, and Pit Orchestras. In college, Evan also played as a session musician on many student recordings, developed a music technology portfolio, and earned his Pro Tools User Certification.

As a 2012 graduate of North Hills High School, Evan served his alma mater's marching band as a percussion instructor/graduate assistant for 5 years.

Evan currently drums in indie pop rock band Hear Tonight, which he founded with fellow Cal U music majors. Hear Tonight has released three albums and has shared the stage with many touring acts including Plain White T's, Marina City, TEAM*, Northern Faces, Mo Lowda & The Humble, and most notably Jesse McCartney. The band has frequently headlined Pittsburgh's Hard Rock Cafe, including all three of their CD release shows.

When he's not teaching, rehearsing, and performing, Evan enjoys collecting vinyl records. He is also an experienced live sound engineer and enjoys recording and mixing in the studio environment.

I really enjoy helping students target their strengths and weaknesses and developing lesson plans and exercises to build skills based on their unique needs. I love seeing students progress and seeing the joy in their eyes when they realize they can do something they weren't able to do before.

I started teaching in high school as I was put into leadership positions in marching band, jazz band, and wind ensemble. When I graduated from high school, I immediately took on a new staff position as a graduate assistant with my high school marching band. This is where I honed my teaching skills, coaching the drumline, running sectionals, and working one-on-one with individual players on their parts.

I am a 2016 graduate of California University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Technology where I studied percussion with Pittsburgh Ballet percussionist Jan Fung. I have also studied with Phil Webster, percussionist for River City Brass Band. I am offering drum lessons, based out of my home. I have been playing drums since I was 12 years old. I currently play in an indie rock band, Hear Tonight, and fill in with bands of other genres around the area. I am also assistant percussion instructor with my alma mater, North Hills High School Marching Band.

About the lesson

When I meet a student for the first time, I will take a few minutes and talk with them to get to know their background in percussion. I will ask them about their strengths and weaknesses, their favorite type of music to play, and what their long-term goals are. At this point, we will get started on something they have already been working on or start with the basics if they have never played drums before.

I have worked mostly with students aged 6-18, but have worked with adults as well.

Students need to think about their long term goals, what variety of music they want to learn, and and what they want to get out of their lessons. This will help them choose a teacher that fits their particular style and needs.

Details

Lesson rates are dictated by Waddell's Music Center and are as follows:

$28 per half hour lesson, weekly, paid monthly

$32 per half hour single lesson, schedule and pay as-you-go
