About Anthony

My name's Anthony and I'm a percussionist, composer, and educator. I've been a music educator since 2013, teaching K-12 in public schools, and ages 5+ in studio/private lessons. I'm experienced in the realms of classical, contemporary/new music, electro-acoustic, marching, improvisation, and popular music (ie. Metal, Rock, Top 40, Country, Folk etc.) I've made my living as a freelance performer, educator, touring musician, composer, and session musician. Most recently I was performing multiple times a week accompanying dancers, as well as working as the in-house percussionist at Music301 Studios. I compose, direct, and perform in the chamber ensemble, "Worms and Marbles." I love teaching students and getting them on their way to making a real living playing music and look forward to hearing from you! -Akap.

Between all my seperat jobs and gigs, I would have to say I love accompanying dancers the most. The interchange, ebon flow, and communication without words, is an incredible experience. There's so many elements to playing for dancers; the use of space, movement, speed, lead/follow, it just goes on and on. Another large aspect of this is improvisation, structured or open, which demands a sense of presence. You have no other option but to be focused and directly involved with what is happening in front of you, all while composing music in real-time. There is nothing that quite matches this interaction of artists in multiple mediums.

I was very fortunate to have a good relationship with my alma mater high school and was welcomed to come teach. I was also very fortunate to have a good relationship with my collegiate marching band director, and was asked to teach at a local Middle-Senior High School in the area.

I have been teaching privately and in the public school system since 2013. I have been a freelance musician, performing in a large variety of musical settings, since 2018. I direct and perform in a Muti-Media ensemble whose members all hold at least a Bachelor's Degree in music, and perform individually and as a group at a professional level.

About the lesson

I have what I would call, "maps" that I use as a baseline for teaching. They serve as a comprehensive and chronological guide that shows progress in the student's playing and growth as a musician in general. From each of these guides, I have splits depending on the student's interests. For example in my Drum Set map, I have the techniques, independence, fundamentals, history, and theory, all in one clump. Sprouting off of that main 'ladder' are different styles, all of which are important, but depending on the student's liking, each route has a specific focus. I feel it is important to have as much general knowledge as possible in each focus, but to get ahead a student should have one primary focus they spend their time driving towards.

I have primarily worked with middle and high school students from beginner to intermediate levels. However, I have worked with students as young as five years old, with no prior knowledge to music, playing, reading, etc. to semi-professional level college students.

I would say if you have any specific goals, to find a teacher who has a vast amount of experience in that area. If you are wanting to simply grow your general knowledge and performance of an instrument and music theory, to find a teacher who has played in the field and made it freelancing. Often times the real-world experience trumps multiple degrees. Although, having both is ideal..

The biggest question is 'Do I love this enough to spend hours and hours working at it?' and 'Is this what I want to do, or is this a distraction from what I really want?'

My Base Rate for Percussion Performance based lessons is $30/hour.
Travel Rates are $5 for 20 minutes. $10 for 30 minutes or more.
