About Merlyn

I customize the experience to the client and ensure I include nutrition information while learning about cooking techniques and recipes. Inlcuding the client is most important and hands-on learning is highly encouraged since cooking is a life skill. I teach cooking and nutrition to all ages, especially highlighting different ways children can be part of cooking. Even learning new techniques if you are already experienced can help see things differently to improve how fast you can cook or enjoy things a little more in the kitchen.

I enjoy connecting with people while sharing my passion of food, cooking and nutrition. I've been teaching cooking and nutrition for over 5 years. Since I was a child, I've been intrigued by this life skill, cooking and as an adult learned how important the nutrition component is.

I've always known I love to cook and share cooking with others. Once I learned there were organizations helping the underserved communities learning this life skill I was hooked and couldn't see myself doing anything else but teaching people how to cook.

I have been trained as a chef and nutrition instructor by multiple organizations. I have a Masters Degree in Public Health where I primarily focused my studies on nutrition and effects of nutrition education on communities. I have been teaching cooking and nutrition classes for 5 years.

About the lesson

Most importantly, I ask what their expectation is for the lesson and future lessons. As we go through the lesson, students may be interested in exploring additional topics or have in depth questions about a topic. I am willing to explore this, but always am mindful on timing and ask if they would like to stay on track or schedule another lesson to focus on new interests. I am willing to do what the student requests as long as its what they want. I have very open communication and make them feel a part of the agenda building as much as they want.

I have worked with students of all ages and abilities. I have worked with people with physical, mental disabilities, and behavior issues. I have also worked with Spanish speaking students.

Do you want one lesson on a particular topic or ongoing on various? Do you want to include nutrition education during the lesson?

Teaching adults about a rainbow salsa. Sometimes people just are use to eating the same food and seeing there faces light up about a recipe that's new, refreshing and beautiful is so rewarding. Most of all people learning that something so tasty can be so healthy is amazing.
