About Joanne

I am completely fluent in both English and Mandarin. I am a great communicator and would love for more people to be multilingual.

About the lesson

I would get to know the student first. The method of teaching can vary based on his personality. I would also give a small pre-test just to know where he is and what direction I should focus on more.

I have worked with many timid students. They are shy to ask questions or face their flaws in pronunciation, but these are all ok. If they are perfect, there would be no need for me. I encourage my students to communicate regularly with me, either questions or concerns, new findings or comments on my lectures, could even be their personal life stories. I wish to be of help to them in any way I can.

The student should be at least somewhat interested in the area, not feeling as if being forced to take a class outside of school. It is important to take the initiative in learning. To better learn Mandarin, I suggest the student to have some access to a Mandarin-speaking community. Language is always learned through practice.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
If it is a request to change lesson time or length, it should be requested in prior. Give the teacher enough time to adjust schedules. If it is personal needs on how to make the lectures more effective, do not hesitate and speak up at once. It is very helpful for both the teacher and the students to know where the problem is.
