About Stephen
I am passionate about learning and teaching Chinese. I spent 6 years in Taiwan learning and tutoring Chinese. I also have taught at Loras College as an adjunct Chinese teacher, and worked with two other high school Chinese programs to organize 3 total immersion field trips to Taiwan in 2015, 2017, and 2019. I tutor Chinese online using the best methods for language acquisition. As a non-native speaker, I have a learner's perspective to explain the twists and turns of Chinese.
I like the way lanuage is so flexible, a tutor can can about a wide variety of compelling topics. I enjoy when students see their own success, and are able to use Chinese as a vehicle to express themselves and their opinions. I like Chinese Story-Telling because people have opinions of stories and the characters, and they are also good for learning idioms.
I became interested in teaching through my interest in Chinese. I think it is such a beautiful and interesting culture and language that I want to share it, and explain it to others.
I have passed the Praxis Content Exam for Teaching Chinese as a Second Language.
Certificate of level 3 proficiency in reading and writing on the Ministry of Education Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language.

I will get to know that student by asking his or her interests, why they are learning Chinese, what they know about Chinese, etc. If they have some history learning Chinese, then I will try to assess the students level by speaking to them in Chinese. If not, then I will give the student a free introductory lesson on greetings, phrases, pinyin, and tones.
As a foreign language teacher I have worked with all kinds and ages K-12.
