About Owen

Learning a foreign language is a unique skill that demonstrates students adaptibility and academic excellence. My goal is to help students consistently engage and expand their vocabulary both through traditional textbook methods as well as project based learning. When tutoring students, the skills from my semester abroad in Shanghai as well as my classes at Union College in New York, where I earned departmental honors in Asian Studies and Political Science and graduated Summa Cum Laude, will serve to improve my students mandarin as well as problem solving abilities.

I love it when students are passionate about learning the language and attaining their goals. I enjoy developing personal relationships with my students, keeping them engaged and allowing me to tailor the academic program to their interests.

I started tutoring in high school and again as an upperclassman at Union College.

As a peer tutor for underclassmen Chinese learners, I have expierence teaching both beginner and intermediate language learners.

As a graduate in Asian Studies and Political Science, my understanding of China exceeds only a language understanding. My lessons will incorporate Chinese literature, music and politics.

About the lesson

Introduce myself, my interests and ask the student about their interests, goals and hobbies.

For each student I assess their mandarin level as well as student's general interests in China. I do so in order to tailor each lesson to material that engages the student's interest.

Language learning is not only about language acquisition. The goal of my lessons is to inspire problem solving and critical thinking.

Beginner and intermediate mandarin learners ages 10-22.

Make sure your teacher is going above and beyond a cookie cutter approach to your learning. In order to really learn the language, an individualized and experiential method of teaching is a neccesity.
