About Elizabeth
I have a Bachelor's degree in Biology from Lewis University with minors in chemistry, biochemistry, and psychology. I am a part the Association for the Coaching and Tutoring Profession, National Science Teacher's Association, Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor's Society and American Chemical Society.
I have provided tutoring for students at Lewis University during my time in college and after college. I volunteered with Big Brothers Big Sisters, Best Buddies, and PADS Homeless Shelter.
I have always loved academia. I find tutoring students to be rewarding, especially when they express motivation to improve on a subject. My favorite moments tutoring include when students teach me things I hadn't learned before and when a student has that "aha" moment!
I got my start with tutoring during college when I discovered the Learning Academic Resource Center because I wanted to receive help in Organic Chemistry. The next year, I decided to give back to the tutoring program and join to help others. I have been involved in tutoring ever since graduating college as it's a passion I wanted to take with me after college. I enjoy being able to conduct my work online due to it's great flexibility.

Before the Session:
- I ALWAYS start out by greeting the student, as interpersonal effectiveness plays a BIG role in successful interaction between the student AND the tutor.
Sessions:
- I ask the student to walk me through the directions for the assignment so I can gain an understanding before starting discussion. From there, I ask the student to identify what part(s) of the assignment(s) they are stuggling to work through.
- Then, I ask leading questions to engage the student in discussion and find out what they know about the question.
- If the student struggles with getting to the next step in the problem on their own, I will always assist by offering a suggestion or providing an example.
- I stay mindful to gage how well my tutoring technique is working for the student. I assess verbal communication, body language, and encourage students to ask any questions or voice any confusion they may have during discussion.
- I will ask the student if they understand the thought process behind my approach, and if not, I can try another approach to see if that works better.
High school to adult students
If the mentor provides any info about their teaching style, read their comments to gage if their teaching style aligns with your learning style. Ultimately, a good fit is where the tutor is able to successfully help motivate and assist the student to achieve their own personal goals.
I recently got a chance to visit with my sister who lives halfway across the country - we enjoyed hiking, making soaps and candles, and cooking different types of cuisine.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
- What brings you to this website?
- Have you identified the area you are having trouble with?
- What do you already know about it?
- Do you know the first or second step in solving the problem?
- If so, is there a specific method or approach that would best help you to solve the problem?
- Are there resources available to you such as a textbook or web browser for you to be able to conduct research?
Recommendations
Recommendations are written by the tutor's friends, family, and acquaintances.
My tutor had a passion for teaching that really helped make learning fun. She answered all my questions in an easy to understand manor while keeping it engaging. Without her I would not have been able to pass my class.
