About Claire
I am a rising senior at Providence College and am pursuing a BS in Biology with a Certificate in Neuroscience. For the past two years, I have worked as a Biology, General Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry tutor at my college. I also help design and lead new tutor training for the college. I love tutoring because I enjoy the relationships I build with each of my tutees. As a result, my tutoring style is very relational and informal. I want my tutees to feel like they are talking to a peer, not a judgmental authority figure. My favorite method for explaining content is to connect it to other, more approachable (and often silly) examples that tutees can grasp and remember easily. I also try to provide step-by-step strategies for solving complex problems.
I received an A in both semesters of General Biology, General Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry in college. I was hired by my college to tutor these subjects, and I have been tutoring for two years. I have Advanced Tutor Certification via CRLA.

I like to start off getting to know the student - why they are taking the class, how they feel about the subject, why they decided to seek out a tutor, etc. I find that starting the meeting with an informal conversation sets the tutee at ease. I then ask the tutee what they hope to gain out of the session, and then we dive in from there. As we work, I try to figure out why the student is struggling and/or what types of explanations work best for the tutee. I try my best to put the tutee at ease so that they see that the subject matter can be, at the very least, not so painful.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should think about what they hope to gain out of their tutoring session, and generate questions that will accomplish that goal. For example, does the student want a given concept explained to them, or do they want to do practice problems? Or do they want study tips? I expect that my tutee largely sets the agenda for our meeting because I want the meeting to be about what they need, so I expect that they think through what it is that they need.
