About Avery

Hello!

I'm a senior at the University of San Diego.

I'm a Pre-Med, Behaviroal Neuroscience major and Gender Studies minor. I'm in the USD Honors Program, Mortar Board Hnors Society and have a 3.98 GPA.

I've been an organic chemistry and writing tutor at my university and I've earned some of the highest test grades in many of my classes.

I'm in a competitive undergraduate research lab focusing on psychology and creativity so I'm also very well versed in psych, research methods, and Biopsych.

I'm passionate about learning! I've always put my best effort into my schoolwork, and along the way I've picked up lots of knowledge and useful strategies which I'm eager to share.

My most valuable learning experiences have been in office hours with professors. Sometimes it just takes the right explanation for the material to click; I hope to be that resource for you, so you can reach your potential!

I know firsthand how amazing it feels to finally grasp a challenging topic. As students we put in so much time and effort into our work, and it can be extremely challenging to struggle with a topic or perform worse on an exam/essay than you expected.

Essay writing strategies, test preparation tips, note taking methods, and helpful explanations can transform your academic performance. I enjoy helping students succeed and receive the high marks they've worked for!

About the lesson

I assess their goals for the tutoring and what they feel they need most help with.
Are organizational and study habits thier issue or are tests tripping them up. If a particular class is challenging them I like to go over which parts of the content are confusing them and break down those issues.
Sometimes a comprehensive review session before a big exam is helpful, even if a student feels they are doing well in the class.

I recently spent time editing a high school senior's application for a scholarship. Having an attentive editor who has written a lot of these applications can transform your essay And maybe the difference between acceptance and rejection. I am fond of how confident in their essay this student was by the end of our session. Applications and essays can be stressful when there's a lot of pressure riding on them. I am happy to serve my students in a way that allows them to feel better about their work.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
In order to receive the most out of a tutoring session I would recommend knowing what it is you need from it in advance. Brainstorming a list of where you're struggling, which topics trip you up, or what parts of a paper you don't feel confident about will help focus our session. Do you as much of your work and studying on your own, make notes about the specific areas where you struggle and we can go over those problem areas together.

It's helpful to know exactly what it is you don't understand beforehand, that way we can address those topics specifically.

If a schedule with at least 5 sessions is set up my rate goes down to $17 per person/hour for long term tutoring arrangements
