About Shay

I love to help my students make connections to their academic materials and assist them in finding strategies that work to their personal learning styles. I have over 16 years experience in the field of education and have taught multiple grades and academic levels. During the pandemic I have found ways to become creative and am still able to make personal connections to my students. This has allowed success to ensue.

I love seeing my students make connections to the material we are studying. I also truly enjoy getting to know my students.

My mom was a teacher and she inspired me. I coached cross country and track while in college and it just solidified that I loved being around students and the school atmosphere and making a difference in their lives.

I have a Bachelor's degree in Science & Social Studies (grades 4-9). I have been a classroom teacher for 16 years. Since the Covid pandemic I have been teaching Live classes since March of 2019 and/or preparing virtual lessons for our fully remote students. I have experience in the hybrid method as well as the full virtually methods.

About the lesson

I have a list of "getting to know you questions" that we will both answer. This will be used as an ice breaker and let's me get to know the student's personality as well as what learning strategies will be most beneficial.

I have with all types! Regular Ed, severe behavior students, students with disabilities, students with IEPs, students on 504s, low-socioeconomic students, high-socioeconomic, students of all races, students from broken homes, students from stable homes, etc. And I have treated them ALL with respect and dignity.

To trust me! We will develop a plan that works and follow it through. If we need to adjust, we will but in the end- YOU will succeed. I was a very successful coach and I carry that competitive attitude over to the classroom. My students are winners :)

During a recent Live teaching over Google Meet I was teaching a lesson on Punnett Squares (which I love!) I was trying to screen share but I couldn't see my students' faces to read if they were getting it or totally lost. So I decided to just draw on paper and hold it up to the camera and have them copy it- I could almost literally see "light bulbs" going off! It was fantastic seeing them "get it" even though I went about it a different way than my plan.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Always be honest! If you have a question, any question, even if you think it's silly- it's not, ask it!!

My standard pricing is $25-40 per hour depending on the amount of prep work needed for the tutoring session. I will be able to quote the student and his/her parent/guardian after the first class. The initial class will hour will be $30 due to all the data collection that will be required. As we move forward if a full hour is not needed we can make price adjustments. I am flexible and understanding of financial situations and will accommodate as needed. I want to help and not let price deter anyone who needs help.
