About Tanya

I am a college professor who is teaching courses in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Bioethics and others. In addition, I run a research group working on antimicrobial resistance in bacterial pathogens. This provides a unique background, knowledge of the undergraduate and graduate programs and experience in mentoring students preparing for very diverse future careers.

While I am mostly working with college and graduate school level students, I also have experience working with middle and high school students.

My major view of any studies is that the knowledge is needed and used in real life and immediate environment around us. If during my interaction with students I can show a bit of that connection between studied topic and everyday life - it makes me smile and feel good about the interaction! In addition, I really like to connect and learn about students I work with and to share my passion for science and research.

As my friend joke - I never left the school! I started with Bachelor, proceeded with Master degree, and then ended up finishing a PhD disseration. Since then I worked in many universities with research heavy education and I am now running my own research group.

About the lesson

At first, we always establish the main goal of the tutoring. Then - the format of interaction and the deadlines or timeframe expected. During the routine sessions we go over the plan but leave the time to re-assess and to address any arising questions. This flexibility allows to explore the material better and get to the more appropriate pace, while still keeping an eye on the final goal.

I mainly work with college students, but some students are from highschool. In the past I have some experience working with middle school students.

Consider the goals of hiring a teacher and communicate those clearly - teachers are eager to help and they would be prepared to help you achieve your goal!

I recently learned that a high school student I worked closely with a year ago was admitted to Vanderbilt University and received a scholarship for his studies - this was a great joy to see that student succeed!
