About Maya

I have years of experience as a tutor and educator. I started teaching private music lessons to younger students when I was in high school. While earning my B.S. in biology, I continued working in education as an undergraduate laboratory assistant for organic chemistry labs and also tutored general chemistry. I also volunteered as a peer mentor for an environmental education program for elementary school students.

After finishing my bachelor's degree, I joined the Peace Corps. I was trained and worked as a secondary (middle and high) school teacher in Cameroon in central/western Africa. I taught biology, chemistry, and human biology to 6th through 9th grade students in a classroom setting for two years.

I got started teaching when I was in high school. I was a gifted music student and started giving private lessons to younger students. My work in education continued when I went to college and beyond.

About the lesson

When working with a new student, I would first want to know about that student's learning style and what he or she wants out of the tutoring experience so that we can customize the instruction to work best for each individual student.

I have worked with students from elementary school through colllege in both the United States and in Africa. I have experience with private tutoring, group instruction, and classroom teaching.

I always enjoyed working with my small human biology class of 18 students at my school in Cameroon, Africa because they were enthusiastic and hardworking!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Before talking to a teacher, a student should have a clear idea of what he or she needs from the teacher. Is it help answering homework questions? Is it help understanding concepts and ideas? Is it help studying for an exam? If the student knows what he or she needs, this will make it easier for the teacher to address those needs.
