About Wendy
I enjoy helping students learn about different biology concepts. I strive to teach students in a memorable way that makes sense to them so that they retain the information not only for exams but long after.
I have had former student email me to say thanks for preparing them for their course work even in medical school. They still remember what I taught them, giving them an upper hand compared to their fellow classmates.
If you're struggling to understand biology concepts, give me a chance to teach them to you. All you have to do is want to learn!
I truly enjoy watching the smile that spreads across the face of my students after they "get it." The experience for me is fulfillment while the experience for my students is accomplishment and pride. I feel a great sense of responsibility to my students. People are bombarded by science-related material every day, whether they realize it or not. I want my non-majors to have a sense of science literacy throughout their lives and my pre-med students to shine in medical school. It makes me exceptionally proud when they write to me afterwards to share their successes with me!
I started teaching as an undergraduate teaching assistant, then as a graduate student teaching assistant. As a researcher, I trained students working in our lab how to do the techniques, but also the biology concepts involved. Now I'm a professor teaching mostly pre-med students at one university while also teaching non-science majors at another university.
I have a B.S. in biology, an M.S. in botany, 25 years of molecular biology research experience, and a Ph.D in Instructional Leadership and Academic Curriculum with an emphasis in science education. I'm currently a college professor teaching Intro biology to non-science majors online and genetics lecture and lab to pre-med students in the classroom.

First, I ask them how they study currently. Then we look at why they're struggling. Once I identify strengths and weaknesses, we try some different approaches to improve on the strengths, reducing the weaknesses, and finding new ways to learn.
Some middle school and high school students, but primarily non-science undergraduate students, and pre-med undergraduate students.
Find a teacher who you are comfortable with, who lifts you up, and tailors instruction to your learning style. Find a teacher who makes you feel proud of yourself and your improvements.
I met with a student who was struggling with her genetics exams, making exam grades in the 60's. After we worked together for about an hour figuring out how to improve her understanding of the material, how to study differently, and how to read the questions on her exams, she scored an 82 on her next exam. I was so proud of much she improved!
I often have students, who aren't in my class, ask me if I would explain things to them because their friend who is taking my class currently or took my class in the past suggested they reach out to me. My response is always, "absolutely!"
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should think through what goals they want to accomplish, and not be afraid to aim high. Having a goal will help your teacher guide you towards accomplishment.

Dr. Martin has always made herself readily available to me in every class I have taken with her. She is very thorough in her explanations, and has never made me feel rushed in our time together.
She is patient and knowledgeable. For every question I had, she was able to explain the answer in different ways until I was able to understand the concept. She was also willing to do additional research on my behalf to answer questions that extended beyond the scope of necessary materials. She made concepts that I previously struggled to understand seem simple!
She's incredibly approachable and has a manner of conveying information and communicating concepts in a way that is easy to understand and then apply yourself to the problem(s) being evaluated. She is the full package as a teacher: someone who is not only a subject-matter expert but also a wonderful and inspiring teacher, who is not only knowledgeable but is also able to convey that knowledge to others. This is something that is uncommon, even among professors, who are professional teachers. I did not really care for the subjects I learned about in her classes prior to having her as an instructor, but genetics also wasn't my strongest subject in biology, but by the end of the two classes she taught, I not only understood genetics well but I was also very interested in the subject and could help and teach other classmates about the things we were learning, so well did I now understand it. Those qualities that best predispose someone to teach well are all present in Dr. Martin, and in abundance.
Dr. Martin is extremely understanding and prioritizes her students.
I've known Dr. Martin since my sophomore year of college, and there has never been a moment when I couldn't drop by or ask her for assistance. As a needy Pre-med student she always makes time to help out everyone!Wendy was perfect at explaining everything. It did not matter how easy or complicated it was, she would sit and explain it over and over until it was understood. She did a fantastic job explaining everything with examples, which helped make everything relatable. The activities she would use for the explanations made the difficult concepts pretty easy to learn.
Dr. Martin provides great insight into the field of genetics. She makes the concepts super easy to understand, and she worked to help clarify areas where I struggled.
Dr. Martin made all of the learning material easy to recall in a thorough and educational manner. She made sure that the course incorporated engaging case studies that were applicable to the material that was taught in lecture, allowing me to apply the concepts to real life scenarios. Although the course itself entailed a lot of information that needed to be retained, all of her lectures explained the concepts in detail, readily preparing me for each of the exams. Dr. Martin ensured that all questions or concerns were answered and addressed. I enjoyed learning from her!
Wendy is very good at working with you when you are stuck on a concept and breaking it down into easily digestible pieces that you can put together to better understand the full concept. I highly recommend working with her!
Dr. Wendy Martin is a wonderful professor and tutor. She presents information in a way that is digestible and understandable to students. I was able to grasp concepts with her help that I was previously confused about. She has a very visual teaching style and provides opportunities for hands on learning that were very helpful to me. She takes time to go through concepts in a logical fashion and provides opportunities to practice what is learned. She is dedicated to making sure her students understand concepts past surface level learning.
She always takes the time needed to break down more complex topics in a way that I can understand. I'm then able to think beyond the textbook and ask questions that combine what I've learned and real life situations, which she always has an answer for. I feel like I've actually ingrained the material into my mind for future use instead of merely cramming it all in for regurgitation just for an exam.
She is a very experienced professor who knows everything you could ask about any natural sciences specifically biology (genetics). She is also helpful in anything in general education, because she has taught for long and knows how to engage with students and their individual learning needs.
Professor Martin was wonderfully patient and kind in helping me understand the material and always went out of her way to accommodate me extra tutoring time if I needed help outside of class. I will 100% be taking her Genetics Lab as well.
Professor Martin is so sweet! She really explains things and takes time to work the ins and out of systems that you may not understand. Very kind
Dr. Martin is a fantastic teacher and mentor! She helped me establish genetics as a cornerstone of my understanding of biology through making extremely complex mechanisms and concepts seem more simple for me to learn and build on. This was exemplified by my great test scores in biology and especially genetics when I took my DAT after having learned so much from Dr. Martin.
