About Jenn

I am a graduate student (PhD candidate) with a background in marinebiology, biology, R-coding, ecology experience. I have taught undergraduate college students both in basic biology and R-coding.

I understand that every student is different and learns differently. I tend to use a number of analogies to help students understand concepts and be able to relate them to other parts of their lives. I use verbal, visual, as well as kinesthetic learning to help students not only learn concepts but practice applying it in a positive guiding environment.

I have always enjoyed sharing facts and knowledge with others since I was a child. I have also been a student who has struggled before in classes and understand how frustrating it can be to not grasp a concept not matter how many times it is explained. It is why I am so passionate in teaching and helping students. I enjoy seeing their excitement when it "clicks" and their confidence boosts. My goal is not only to help students feel confident in their knowledge of a subject, but to be patient and confident with themselves. It may take a little bit, but I want them to know they can understand any subject - the trick is honing in on how they best take in information.

I have always wanted to be in academia. I got started as a teaching assistant and found that I really enjoyed working with students to understand the content and problem solving with them.

Teaching college level biology. A bachelors in Marine Science and a Master's in Ecology.

About the lesson

I recommend students to bring in old tests, quizzes, homeworks, and even new homeworks. I review these with them to understand what logic they used to fill in certain answers to see if there was some form of miscommunication about the subject matter rather than lack of understanding of a concept. I then work through their new homeworks, specifically on questions they are unsure about or confused on, answering any question (I don't believe in stupid or silly questions). In the event a student doesn't know what they don't know I ask them to explain to me what they understand so far so I can help them make connections between what they already know to new things.

I also focus students on breaking down words they may not understand, recognizing latin prefixes and suffixes. I found this to be, personally, a helpful tool in reasonging and logic especially on tests. This tool will not only foster understanding of the "mystery" word, but will foster more confidence in their choices.

Mostly college students (mostly freshman and sophomores) and even some "going back to get my college degree" students.

Look for someone who you feel confortable with. When your comfortable you feel less self concious asking questions and that makes the learning process that much easier.

Its okay to change tutors as well. Sometimes, teaching styles and learning styles simply don't match and thats okay. Don't give up on finding a tutor though!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Try to narrow down where you think you have trouble. As obvious as that is, even having some idea of what you do understand can be helpful in guiding students in tutoring.
