About Jonathon

2019 Student's Choice Teaching Award - Texas A&M Genetics 301

I have spent 4 years in a genetics PhD program, have a masters degree in genetics, a bachelors degree in biochemistry, and a bachelors degree in genetics. I have 8 years of laboratory experience and 1 year of college level teaching experience. I am highly qualified to tutor in most life science fields. My expertise is in genetics, general biology, biochemistry, cell biology, developmental biology, and cancer biology.

I love working one-on-one with students. I work hard to help them grasp difficult scientific concepts. Seeing students get excited about science is a huge reward for me. I'm extremely passionate about science literacy and science education. I'm laid back, easy to talk to, and try to make things fun. I can't wait to start working with you.

Teaching was a responsibility for all students in my PhD program. I fell in love with it after the first year. Seeing the 'ah-ha' moment a student has once they understand a concept is extremely rewarding.

I was a teaching assistant at Texas A&M university. My responsibilities included giving weekly genetics lectures to undergraduate students and teaching them advanced laboratory techniques. I also held office hours weekly and worked with students one-on-one to help them with their lab reports.

While working in the lab, I mentored undergraduate students and incoming lab members to help them understand the lab techniques and the concepts behind them.

About the lesson

I like to begin by establishing a student's knowledge base. Once I understand how much they know and understand about their topic of study, I'll start working with them to bring them up to the necessary level for whatever they are studying. I take the time to work through concepts and simplify things to make them easier to understand. I do not just give a student the answer, but lead them to it.

I have worked mainly with undergraduate students, but am willing to work with any age.

Look for somebody that is passionate and that you can get along with. Due to my age and relaxed demeanor, I am easy for students to relate to and be comfortable with.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What level of teaching do I need?

What kind of attitude to I want in a tutor? Do I need them to push me hard or work at a slow pace?

How often do I need my tutor to be available?

Do I prefer a tutor that I can meet with online or in person?
