About Susan

Why my approach works...

1. My content does not contain as much "nice-to-know" nursing content as it does “need-to-know”. NCLEX doesn't want that; they want the "need-to-know" content, and here is why:

2. The purpose of the NCLEX exam is to assure that nursing schools are putting out SAFE nurses. That's really about it, seriously. Where it gets difficult is how to go about and assure that with an exam...NCLEX wants candidates to be able to critically think (or in question-eze "analyze") information in order to make the safest choice of care.

3. Honestly, you can purchase or answer 5000 questions and it's not going to work. The #1 thing I hear from my former clients is that they learned to approach the exam in a different way after reviewing with me. There is a huge difference between answering questions and looking up the rationales and taking one of my exams (with questions that are 90% at the analysis level), and then discussing them with another nurse...it makes it more sense to you and the material sticks. If you do the 8-week review, you're going to be answering (& DISSECTING) about 1500 questions.

4. I send out weekly exam-taking strategy handouts (I have over 30 of them), and as we review the exams you take and send back to me, we discuss those strategies on the questions you've answered, so the strategy information is integrated into the review.

I absolutely enjoy working with students and find great pleasure in seeing my students succeed. I'm patient and am skilled at explaining ideas and concepts in multiple ways to accommodate the needs of the student. I have a laid-back demeanor, and I try to make studying Nursing & Pharmacology stress-free and enjoyable. I will always answer your calls and texts promptly, and I'm great at responding to emergencies, or something as simple as you needing a NCLEX or Nursing pep-talk! I am available to help you learn the concepts, understand that one thing that is driving you crazy, or to help you effectively study for that one thing that is driving you crazy, or to help you effectively study for that one big test. No question is off limits - if you don't know, then it is a question worth asking.

I am a Masters-prepared Registered Nurse, with certifications in Orthopaedic and Critical Care. I have been licensed for over 25 years; the past 14 years as a nursing program (all courses), pharmacology and dosage calculations instructor. I can help you to realize and then use what you already know! In other words, you have the knowledge; I can help you use it to pass your exams!

I have a unique approach to nursing content review that does include brain work, but has shown to be invaluable in answering Nursing/NCLEX-type questions. If you need tutoring in Professional Nursing (RN) (LPN/LVN) courses and/or preparation for HESI, NCLEX-RN, NCLEX PN, CCT (Clinical Calculation Test) you have found your tutor!!

In groups, I began reviewing NCLEX approximately 10 years ago.  This was done for the community college where I work, and it would include about 60 graduate nurses per trimester, so 180 per year.

I began one-on-one NCLEX tutoring 5-6 years ago because I believed there was a need.  I understand the value of the “canned” review programs (Hurst, Kaplan, ATI, etc.), but I think there’s a need for individualized review and wow, has that proven to be true!

I require the student to not only provide me the answer to the question, but also their rationale.  Not a rationale that they find in a book or on the internet, but using their vast knowledge base (seriously, you have no idea how much you know).  They also have to give me a question topic and key words found in the question.  This works beautifully in that after a couple of weeks, students are changing their reaction to questions they find challenging.  That reduces stress, improves success which in turn reduces anxiety while building confidence.

I hold a Masters in Nursing and have been coaching (tutoring) on NCLEX, HESI, ATI, post Kaplan & HURST, using the online approach for 6+ years years now. I have tutored hundreds of nursing students over my 19 years as a Nursing Instructor.  I have tutored students who are preparing for their first attempt, and I have an equal number of students who have taken the exam many times..

You will receive a schedule of topics that will be covered in your review.

We agree on a time when we can meet via the Skype or just using a phone..  Students are given very specific instructions in that regard. In addition to completing the review and practice questions in Saunders, you will be receiving at least 5 (usually more) exam(s) from me, each week, covering content in the order it is listed in the schedule I will be providing to you/Saunders, and these also have very specific instructions on how to complete them. The majority of my questions are at the “analysis” cognitive level (Bloom’s Taxonomy), and are current with the April 2019 NCLEX test plan (the test plan is revised once every 3 years).  Once you complete the exams you email them back to me. We go over the exams in detail, deconstructing and then reconstructing the question in words you understand.  I give you feedback on why you're answering certain questions wrong and how to figure them out even if you’re not sure about them. We'll talk about what the questions are asking and how to narrow that down.

I have tutored students from coast-to-coast, Puerto Rico, and several countries (Nigeria, UK, Australia, Mexico, Canada).  I am comfortable working with students whose primary language is something other than English, and I have tutored students who have taken nursing program courses more than once or have taken NCLEX 8 times or more.

The two primary keys to my tutoring success are (besides my excellent knowledge base & the ability to explain complex content principles) my one-on-one approach and my use of rationales with review to make sure my students not only know the material, they UNDERSTAND the material.

1.  Are they qualified?

2.  Can they help you with the various strategies needed to answer NCLEX-like nursing questions?

3.  Do they provide you with practice materials instead of telling you to read a textbook?

4.  Are they passionate about their career and what they are teaching?

5.  Are they able to transfer their knowledge to you in language you understand? (Beware of tutors who want to show you a PowerPoint and then proceed to read the slides to you!)

6.  Do they celebrate your success?

I have at least one of my students call me every week letting me know they passed either their nursing program course or NCLEX.  There is NO BETTER feeling than hearing my clients tell me they have succeeded (it is, after all, why I’m here!)

I charge $55.00 per hour.

You are not charged time on any of the materials I provide you (that would be ridiculously expensive, right?)  Most students do 2 hours each week reviewing we me via phone, where I, having already reviewed your completed exam(s) since you send them to me before we meet, will go over the exam with you.  If you need specific syllabus coursework that has multiple content topic areas, or a shorter NCLEX review schedule (e.g. 3-4 weeks or less), you will be charged for 1-hour of time at $55.00 .

In order to save student’s time, I do review the exams before we talk so that we just cover those questions you answered incorrectly or ones that you weren’t sure about.  Honestly, it changes the way you think about the questions before you answer them.  You get used to REALLY analyzing these analysis level questions!

So for example, a student will meet with me on say a Monday and Thursday for an hour each time, going over exams that I have sent and you have completed and sent back to me at least 1 hour before we review them.  You pay by the session, not all at once!  I DO NOT BELIEVE IN “PRO-RATING” LESSON SESSIONS!!  THIS MEANS THAT EVEN IF WE ARE SCHEDULED FOR AN HOUR SESSION, AND ONLY NEED 50 MINUTES, YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR 50 MINUTES ONLY!!

Every review that I do can be and usually is personalized to the needs of the student.  You are offered upwards of 100 different exams on all areas of NCLEX content, but you choose to do them all or only some of them.

Absolutely, I tutor for shorter time periods (I do charge a one-time custom scheduling fee of $55.00.  This is because it takes a couple of hours to get your customized schedule together.  I recently finished coaching a student who contacted me 1.5 weeks before her exam, wanting some fine-tuning on her question strategies and confidence-building. She called me this morning from New York.  She Passed!  232 questions, she thinks approx. 40 were select-all-that-apply, and also tons of prioritization questions.  This was her second attempt.  I do not believe in dishonesty, so you will never hear me tell you that you are ready unless, in my very educated opinion, I believe you are.  AT the same time, I’m a super-firm believer that it’s just as important to realize what you are doing well at, as well as what you need coaching (tutoring) for.
