About Ruizhi

I extend the principle of active learning to a list of strategies:

· Motivating my students to develop their own learning interests and cultivate critical thinking through actively engaging them in problem-solving in classrooms is my objective.

· Incorporate case-based problem-solving lectures and exercises to engage students in learning.

· Explain advanced technologies in simple ways and let students grasp a technology concept to take them interests in the areas where they are experiencing a disconnect.

· Facilitate in-class activities (e.g., peer instruction exercise) and discussion (e.g., small-group discussion, partner discussion) to guide students to make connections between theories and practice in real-world contexts.

· Design after-class learning activities that are both significant and challenging for students so that they are stimulated to think “beyond” their comfort zone in their own learning process.

· Encourage collaboration among and between the student themselves in in-class and after-class activities.

I formed the core of my teaching philosophy: active learning. People learn best by doing things, and students are more likely to gain deeper knowledge when engaging in learning experiences that stimulate their sense, especially in the IST (information system & technology) discipline. IST is the study of how to utilize information technologies effectively for individuals, organizations, and society. The field is quite interdisciplinary in that one can apply IS principles to solve practical problems and make may domains more effective – business, science, humanities, engineering, architectures, health care, organizations, etc.

Early in my academia, I became a curious observer of my professors while being a research and teaching assistance. I slowly shored up a collection of effective teaching techniques by comparing their different approaches, thinking about their teaching methods, assessing which methods were more effective to stimulate student learning and garnish feedbacks for course improvements. I also practiced these techniques as I teach as an adjunct faculty of data management, data analysis, and business intelligence in different universities.

In the first semester (Summer 2021) of teaching Statistical Dynamics of Data Mining in Healthcare as the adjunct faculty at the University of Denver (DU), I designed the course and arranged the content of each section based on the Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (KDDM) process model. By following this approach, students are able to walk through the process of a data mining project in a systematic manner. In addition, the data I provided for the practice were all real-world healthcare data that require students to learn how data cleaning and integration. I only provided fields definition and descriptions. Such exercises give students a quick understanding of dealing with complex and confusing data when they first enter the workforce. At last, I set the final project as a group assignment and allocate students with differing backgrounds into the same group to improve their communication and encourage collaboration.

I believe that it is an instructor’s responsibility to make the class interesting, engaging, and relevant for students while encouraging all students to approach it in the way which is most fruitful for them. I do my best to facilitate the transformation of knowledge and experience, stimulate ideas outside the classroom, and situate ideas in a real-world context

Undergraduates and graduate students

With the development of technology, the teaching environment has changed. COVID-19, in particular, has made remote teaching a common occurrence and may become the norm in the future. The advantage of it is that it can provide education for more people with time or location constraints, but the disadvantage is that it can sometimes make communication less efficient. Therefore, in my remote teaching, I usually add discussion and student-driven coding by sharing their screens to increase participation. I am glad that this approach has been welcomed by students.
