About Gerald
The 14th century humanist Francesco Petrarca said: there is no greater joy than learning. I adhere to that adage; I get a kick out of teaching people something they thougth they weren't able to do. I see teaching as taking someone on an uphill journey. It will be difficult and it will be exhausting, but my God, the view up there is worth every step of the way. My strongest assett is persistence. You need as much time as you require for your learning purposes and I don't mind that, I am patient. I have been learning to play the violin for many years now and my learning curve is not very steep, but I don't care, I just love being able to learn how to play.
As an editor for a magazine that was aimed at small scale local newspapers I regularly was asked to teach journalism classes, mostly in deprived neighborhoods. I worked with people who were beginners and taught them the entire process: from organizing editorial meetings, writing, photography, editing, lay out and even the printing and distribution process.
I have a bachelors degree in newspaper journalism and a masters in playwrighting. I have been writing, directing and producing my own plays my whole life. I work as a free lance writer. Next to writing I have also taught sailing and soccer to both adults and children.

Before we start I will have established the student's skill level. Based on that assesment we will make a plan for one class or a serie of classes, that all depends on what the student's ambitions are. I would like to point out here that a student's success depends on how much time the student is willing to invest in the work. As a teacher I am like a coach, the student is the one who has to win the race.
I have worked and have been successful in my career as a teachter/instructor with a wide variety of students. I have taught inmates in a juvenile detention center as well as CEOs of large companies. I have taken inexperienced actresses and made them shine and I have tamed divas. I am very much grounded in my no nonsense northern European roots.
If you are willing to invest in your future you have to find a teacher who believes in you and will guide you on your way. Find a teacher who wants to commit to your growth, who takes time to check in with you in between lessons. Find a teacher who will find satisfaction in your success.
I was asked to do a playwriting work shop at a local juvenile detention center. This was a class room setting with 5 or 6 students per class. Instead of lecturing the students I gave them a piece of paper and the guard gave them a pencil to write with. Some of the students were doodling, but a few took to it and started penning down a story from their own lives in dialogue form thereby creating the very beginning of a play. We are planning to continue these classes in order to end with an actual performance of a self-written, self-directed and self-acted play.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Be frank. Not only ask your teacher to help define your goals, also ask the teacher how he or she can help you reach those goals. I think you have to believe in your teacher as a guide; someone who takes you through rough terrains and then push you off again into another unknown for which you might have to find another guide, or you have grown enough and are able to negototiate the new situation yourself.

I'm asking $25 per hour for the lessons. The skill assesment, which includes a lot of reading time, is free. I can do group lessons as well but have to price that per project because it demands a different kind of preparation.
