About Robert D

I have 45 years professional experience in live theater as an actor, director, dramaturg (theater historian/script editor/script doctor) and acting coach, primarily using Berry, Rodenberg & Schechner techniques.

Further, I've worked in various other capacities (designer, stage manager, production manager, producer, playwright) on approximately 150 productions regionally, in summer stock and New York City since 1978.

I performed in regional premieres of Ronald Millar's "Abelard & Heloise" (Midwest, as Bernard of Clairvaux) and Alan Ayckbourn's "Relatively Speaking" (Southeast, as Greg) and studied advanced acting at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park with Word ("The Fantasticks") Baker, in Atlanta with Stuart Culpepper, and in New York City with Gene Frankel and Roger Hendricks Simon. With Frankel and Simon, I also studied playwriting and directing.

In addition, I am a playwright and lyricist. I hold an AB from Eastern Kentucky University in English Literature and General Theater Studies. My MA in directing and theater management was granted by the University of Cincinnati.

Reviews and letters of recommendation from recent collaborators and other well-known members of the industry are available upon request.

My rates are reasonable and negotiable.

Creating worlds of imaginatione for audiences to enjoy and perhaps to inform their own lives. The immediacy and intimacy of live theater can in no remote way be simulated, even on the internet with a camera and microphone. One must sit in a darkened auditorium with a community other people, experience the laughter, tears, applause and viscerally share with the actors on the stage the emotions they are expressing in the moment.

The magic and wonder of listening to the words being spoken at each performance, undiluted and unedited, cannot be matched. Nor can witnessing the verisimilitude of the physical action, abetted by lighting, scenery, costumes, makeup and props, performed by living, breathing human beings, be replicated with the attendant aroma of sweat, whether on the large or small screen.

Passing on the knowledge that I've acquired, helping younger actors, directors and playwrights to perhaps avoid some of the mistakes I've made. And to give them the freedom and courage to make their own mistakes.

About the lesson

I ask students to prepare two three-minute monologues, contrasting in style and genre: comedic/dramatic, modern/pre-modern and to present them formally, imagining themselves onstage before a live audience.

I then ask the student to describe, in general terms, the character who is speaking the words and the circumstances: time, place, and conditions.

Together, we then break down the speeches into beats (changes in subject or mood) moments (the important points) and transitions.

Following this, I ask the student to repeat the monologues, hopefully keeping in mind what we have just discussed and, if necessary, stopping and correcting them.

I conclude by asking the student whether they have culled the speeches from a book of monologues or if they have read the plays themselves.

Either way, I ask that before the next meeting they actually examine or re-examine the speech and the character in the context of the play, and to do historical research into the playwright and the era in which he or she wrote.

Details

My rates are reasonable and negotiable, usually $30.00 per hour, plus travel expenses if I go to the student. Group rates are less. For directing and dramaturgical services, I charge $50.00 per hour.
