About Chris

Atlas strives to engage and enlighten young artists through the passions they have for the performing arts. Over twenty-six years of instruction, we have encouraged students to try, fail, and try again- working to achieve the end result that they have wanted to find. I wanted to be a teacher even before I found my love for the theatre and the arts. The idea of helping other become the best they can be, to pursue their passions, and to see them succeed in finding their true selves through the work I share with them gives me no greater satisfaction. I have performed all over the country, to all kinds of audiences, in all sorts of mediums, and nothing compares to the smile on a student's face when they have that "Ah Ha!" moment; when the work they do in class suddenly clicks and they see the impact their arts has on those around them.

As I shared prior, I wanted to be a teacher even before being an actor. My first class was in 1995, teaching stage combat and Shakespeare for the Utah Shakespeare Festival's Educational Department. Since then, I have worked for a variety of companies as an educator and administrator. More information is available upon request.

About the lesson

The first step in my process is called "Learning Your Learners." This is an ongoing process of course, but I need to start off with a sense of who they are, what they want to accomplish, and to assess the best path to get there. We chat about their background, their experience, their passions, and then we get on our feet and play. Acting is a craft. Craftspeople utilize tools to develop their work. Class consist of gathering tools that are then applied to the process of acting. Eventually, we also want to look at working on product, which are pieces the student can take away to use in their development as an actor. This could be monologues. It could also be working on scenes, improvs, and other types of projects in class that will be shared with others. Because, performance does not become theatre until it is shared with others; before that, it is merely practice. The interaction in the living moment with an audience is the step that, often times, teaches us the most- both students and instructors.

Get to know the person you are looking to study with. Yes, their background and experience helps, but they have to be able to connect with and see what it is that you are wanting and needing in your educational experience.

My most recent gig was as a Manager of Interpretation and Mediated Experiences for the Mob Museum in Las Vegas, NV., where I coached Educators in their presentations and worked to develop and facilitate content both with the Education team and within the mediated experiences the museum offers. My ability to teach and develop curriculum crosses over to all sorts of disciplines and I was proud of the growth that the Educators showed during my year and a half with them.

I do offer classes and workshops, depending on time of year, availability, etc. Prices can vary for those, depending on who is sponsoring the opportunities.

I will work with students on pricing as well, offering discounts based on the purchase of multiple classes.
