About Stephen

I devote very individual attention to a student's current situation and their personal goals for acting. We discuss their experience and understanding of acting, and the kind of work they like to do. From there, I work with the student to highlight their strengths, but also to challenge them to expand their range as an actor.

I have worked for more than 30 years as an actor, teacher, fight director, and movement consultant. I trained as a professional actor at the Terry Schreiber Studio in New York City and certified in advanced levels of stage combat with The Society of American Fight Directors. My movement background includes Chinese kempo, Wing Chun, Soo Hwa Gung Fu Japanese aikido and Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu sword work, foil and epee fencing, ballet, modern, and period dance, classic pantomime, Grotowski movement theatre, and bioenergetics. I've choreographed dozens of productions for professional, regional, and community theaters, the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, and European theatre festivals, plus taught actors, dancers, singers, and opera students at the university and conservatory levels.

I enjoy working with all different kinds of people. Every actor is unique, with their own outlook on life, and with their own goals.

I like to hone in on finding the actor's strengths and unique attributes, and helping them to enhance and share those gifts openly. I also enjoy helping actors to find the freedom to take more risks, and watching them grow in their work, and ultimately finding more power and confidence as a performer.

About the lesson

I like to spend the first meeting really getting to know who the acting student is, what their experiences have been, and what the want to achieve. Of course, some of their goals can be communicated before the first meeting. If they have material they would like to perform, we can look at that.

Based on their needs and wishes, we will determine what kind of material will help them grow as an actor while also being valuable in their performances and/or auditions.
