About Ryan

My goal as an acting teacher is to help all of my students give more honest, spontaneous, visceral, and satisfying performances. I firmly believe that the ability to act well resides within every person who has the desire to act. In order to access this ability, actors need to develop a strong sense of self, increase their confidence, and rid themselves of the habitual tensions that hold them back. Therefore, training with me will be personal, individualized, and focused on self discovery.

Lessons with me will focus first and foremost on discovering and honoring yourself as a person and an artist, and then on developing your relationship with the text. We can work on a specific piece or pieces (for an audition or a performance), or on plays, scenes or monologues that we choose together, to help develop you as a performer. No matter what, text we choose, we will focus on you speaking own personal truth through your performance.

I have recently been accepted into an elite graduate actor training program, and so I have had experience and success at preparing school auditions. I can help you put together an audition that shows schools not only your current skills and talents, but the potential for who you can be as an artist. I also have several years of professional acting experience, so I can help you prepare for the professional world as well.

I think that making great art is the most satisfying and wonderful thing you can do! Also, I've always loved teaching and coaching, so this is really the best of all worlds for me! I love seeing others reach their full potential and achieve their goals, especially when I know that I was able to help them on their journey. I work hard, and I'm passionate about what I do, so if you decide to work with me, you can be sure that I'll do everything I can to help you achieve your potential as an actor!

I've always enjoyed teaching! My first job was actually teaching swimming lessons to kids at summer camps. I was a teaching assistant in cacting classes while I was at college, and now that I've graduated, I coach swimming at the collegiate level and work with actors of all different skill levels. No matter the subject matter, nor the level of the student, my goal is to help ignite my students' passion, and help them be the best that they can be!

I have a B.A. Summa Cum Laude in Theatre and Philosophy from Hamilton College, and I will be pursuing my M.F.A. in Acting at DePaul University, starting this fall. I have also completed intensives in Shakespeare, Auditioning, Linklater Voice Training, Meisner Technique, Text Analysis, Viewpoints, Suzuki, Commedia, and Mask Work.

About the lesson

First, we'll chat about your prior experience with acting (it's ok if you don't have any!), and your goals for our lessons, and then work out a plan that is specifically tailored to achieving those goals. I've trained in many different acting techniques and methodologies, so I'm confident I can put together lesson plans to suit your needs as an actor. No matter what, I will work to help you speak your truth, connect with the given text, and give powerful, spontaneous performances!

I've worked with students at many different skill levels: beginners through early professionals. I've trained in many different acting techniques, with many different kinds of teachers, so I know that, no matter your skill level, I can put together lessons that will help you reach your potential as an artist!

Find a teacher that you connect with, who is passionate about the craft, and who understands the artist that you want to be, and, if you're interested in acting potentially, one who knows the industry. Most importantly, though, find a teacher who helps you deepen your passion for acting and makes you look forward to every lesson!
