About Jeanie

I'm not just an acting teacher, I'm a working director and actor. I teach only one to two classes a week, I'm NOT building a teaching empire. As an artist who has performed on B'way in works by Tennessee Williams & Eugene O'Neill; who studied at NYU and in London, and who ran two classical theater companies in LA, I know what makes a great actor stand apart from a good one. I'm equally adept with on-camera technique & preparing actors for film & tv auditions. I know almost all the casting directors and agents, and I know what they're looking for now. I'm at the top of my game in my teaching career: I'm familiar with every style and genre, and confident I know how to make actors highly competitive here in the Olympics of Acting!

I love creating the kind of environment where actors are both nurtured and challenged. The right acting class, the right acting coach gives us the tools we need to discover our CONFIDENCE in our talent. She gives us the comfort to tolerate creative discomfort necessary for growth. This is where we connect with a community of people who share the same values & vocabulary. Where we immerse in trust: in the artist-teacher / in our fellow actors / in ourselves -- so as to reveal all of who we are via the work. Where we learn secrets about craft & about ourselves through others. Where we uncover our authentic self, embrace our contradictions, find our way to a living the best life possible: as an actor-artist with a flourishing career.

I started teaching when I served as the artistic director of LA's Classical Theater Lab -- and created then its actor training program in the classics. Though I'm adept in contemporary and classic theater, I also teach on-camera and script analysis for SAG-AFTRA's acting academy and coach actors for auditions for film and television. I started coaching when an agent who is a friend asked me to meet with a client - and he booked the job!

Jeanie is an actor, director, writer and acting teacher. Recently she directed Long Day’s Journey Into Night with Jane Kaczmarek and Alfred Molina at The Geffen Playhouse, and the world premiere of Who You See Here at the Martha’ Vineyard Playhouse. Other LA: Love, Noel at The Wallis Annenberg Center, Kindertransport and The Constant Wife with LA Theater Works. She’s former artistic director of The Antaeus Company, where she has directed scores of readings, workshops and productions of classical plays & “new” classics, including the award-winning world premiere of Jeffrey Hatcher’s adaptation of Balzac’s Cousin Bette. As an actor, she’s played leading roles on Broadway in O’Neill’s Ah, Wilderness and A Streetcar Named Desire. Regional: Williamstown (7 seasons). LA Theater: CTG, Pasadena Playhouse, South Coast Rep, Boston Court, Odyssey, Fountain, Blank & 24th Street Theaters. TV: Judging Amy, Criminal Minds, The West Wing and others. Film: most recently, The Road to The Well. In The Workroom, Jeanie’s virtual space for all things acting + creative process + theatre art, she teaches acting, blogs about art & entrepreneurship, and produces events to gather and connect the LA theatre tribe. She is the author of two books for actors: The Actor’s Chekhov and Toward Mastery, both based on the work of director Nikos Psacharopoulos. She studied at New York University and The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.

About the lesson

Ideally, before I work with a new actor, I like to set up a (free) 20-minute consult — for both of us to learn more about each other, & how I can help you master your auditions & grow your craft. Often my first meeting with a new client comes in the context of an initial coaching session. If that's the case, we'll take extra time in your first session so that I can better understand your needs / process.

I've been teaching and coaching for over 20 years. Stand-out actor-students include Chris Pine, Simon Helberg, Jessica Hecht, Angela Goethals, Brooke Bloom, and many others. I rarely work with students under 16 -- though I make some exceptions. I like to work with people who have a strong drive not only to have a big, successful career, but who desire to strive for mastery of craft, to become a true artist.

I work mostly with trained, professional actors, and infrequently with beginners. Actors who work with me on auditions for under-grad or grad-schools, or on work for the professional arena already know how rigorous and competitive this arena is, which requires that actors 1) Have a fully equipped tool-box (a variety of technique & analysis skills) ~ 2) Know how to work very, very hard ~ 3) Know how to compete (the "head" game of the craft) ~ 4) Know how to win (giving yourself permission to use all of yourself.)

I'm always happy when a student of mine books a big job. Recently a young actor booked his first lead role in a movie -- and not only did I coach him for the audition, we also worked on the role itself once he got it. It was a full-circle event to see him come so far in the two years we have been working together.
