About Maryam

There are no "one size fits all" tutoring plans, and my lessons are specifically tailored to each student's goals, strengths, areas for improvement, and unique backgrounds. I put my heart and soul into each student because I am personally invested in not only ensuring that my student learns the materials, but that they feel confident, empowered, and ready to use their new skills.

Seeing my students' faces light up with not just understanding, but true enjoyment of the material we are studying is priceless for me.

I got my first tutoring job when I was 17, tutoring SAT and ACT prep, and never looked back. Continuing to tutor throughout the upcoming years, I now have over four years of experience in not only SAT and ACT, but also various levels of mathematics, sciences, writing, and MCAT preparation. Originally, I was an employee for Varsity Tutors, where I was a top ranked, 5 star tutor, but I chose to begin working with private clients in order to give me more flexibility to tailor each lesson plan to perfectly fit my students' needs. Outside of tutoring, I was full time academic mentor for first year students at the University of Miami from August 2018-March 2020, and also worked as an organic chemistry teaching assistant from August 2018-May 2019.

I hold a double Bachelor's of Science in Public Health and Biochemistry from the University of Miami, received with a 4.0 GPA, Summa Cum Laude Honors, and Valedictorian of my graduating class. I also have over 5 years of tutoring experience and 2 years of professional academic mentoring experience.

About the lesson

The first session is all about getting to know my student and making sure they are comfortable with me. We set up a plan and goals for moving forward as well.

I have worked with students aged 4-50! Each student is unique, not just because of age, so I am happy to tailor an individualized program for everyone, regardless of their age. Most of my experience is with middle schoolers, high schoolers, and undergraduate college students.

Many people have good credentials- high test scores or degrees, but far fewer people have the passion and dedication to be an effective tutor. When searching for a tutor, make sure to talk with them and make sure that you can connect with them on a personal level. Ensure that they are willing to go the extra mile for you, and that spending hours with them working to grasp difficult concepts will not be difficult.

I am always working to find ways to help students enjoy and remember the material they are learning more easily, so I frequently try to create acronyms. Recently, I was working on periodic trends in chemistry with a student, and we created a really funny acronym related to one of her favorite hobbies. We had a great laugh, but she also remembered all the trends easily for the rest of the semester, without having to struggle or spend hours doing so.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Do not be afraid to ask about lesson plans, goals, and how the tutor intends to ensure your success. A good tutor will have a plan. Also, consider getting to know the tutor a bit more- make sure that he/she is someone you want to work with.
