I am skilful in promoting a very engaging and pleasant learning environment, which keeps my students motivated, eager to learn, and communicate in class. This is because I am very passionate about teaching, and I believe that is why my students are always highly motivated and enjoy very much my lessons. Also, I believe my strongest attribute is my personal relationship and involvement with students. Moreover, my knowledge of the subject’s curriculum, as well as my broad experience, allow me to develop very engaging activities and lesson plans, which promote the development of my students’ language skills.

  • 1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

Spanish has always been part of my identity because of my Colombian and Spanish background, but my love for the language grew through literature, inspiring teachers and my academic journey.

As a child, I grew up surrounded by different accents, expressions and cultural influences, which made me realise very early that Spanish is not just one language, but many ways of seeing and describing the world. Later, studying Hispanic Philology and teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language helped me understand the depth, beauty and diversity of the language even more.
  • 2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

For me, Gabriel García Márquez represents the richness of the Spanish-speaking world beautifully. His work captures the musicality, imagination and emotional depth of the language, especially the warmth and richness of the Caribbean culture, which is my favourite region in Colombia because of its extraordinary mix of influences, traditions and ways of expressing life.
  • 3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

One thing I love about Spanish is how expressive and affectionate it is. In Colombia, for example, people often use diminutives like “un momentico” or “cafecito”, which make everyday interactions sound warmer and more personal.

I also love the tradition of long conversations around the table. In many Spanish-speaking cultures, language is not only used to communicate information, but also to create closeness, humour and community.
  • 4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Speaking Spanish matters to me because it connects people across cultures and continents. It allows us to share stories, emotions and perspectives in a very vibrant and human way.

As a teacher, I especially enjoy seeing students gain confidence and discover that learning a language is also a way of understanding new cultures — and sometimes even themselves.
  • 5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

One of the main difficulties in learning Spanish is often gaining confidence when speaking. Many students are afraid of making mistakes, especially with pronunciation or grammar.

I believe the key is consistency and meaningful communication. A supportive environment, regular exposure to the language and lessons adapted to the student’s interests make a huge difference. Learning should feel engaging and practical, not intimidating.
  • 6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

I remember that my Spanish language teacher used to call me “Rata” for an entire year. At first, I did not understand why, and I honestly thought he was making fun of me.

At the end of the school year, I finally asked him why he called me that. He smiled and said: “Because you are a "rata de biblioteca (bookworm)". I was very impressed by a comment you made about Federico García Lorca. Only an avid reader could have made that observation.”

I remember feeling relieved and a little flattered. Looking back, I think that moment reinforced my love for literature and language.
  • 7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Growing up between Spain, Colombia and Portugal gave me a very international and open perspective on language and culture from an early age. It made me realise that even within the Spanish-speaking world, accents, vocabulary, humour and ways of communicating can vary enormously depending on the region and cultural context.

Living in different countries also helped me become more adaptable and empathetic towards language learners, because I understand what it feels like to communicate outside your comfort zone and navigate different cultures. That experience strongly influences the way I teach today: with patience, curiosity and a personalised approach.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof in language?

What makes me a Superprof is the combination of academic training, international experience and a genuinely personalised approach to teaching.

I have a degree in Hispanic Philology and a Master’s in Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language, but beyond qualifications, I care deeply about helping students feel comfortable, motivated and capable. I adapt my lessons to each student’s goals and personality, whether they want conversational fluency, exam preparation or simply more confidence when speaking Spanish.

For me, teaching is not only about grammar — it is about meaningful connections, culture and helping people connect with the world through language.
