About Ben
Hi, I'm Ben. A professional musician working as a keyboard player and musical director in the world of Musical Theatre. I have a real love for the academic/analytical side of music, which formed the main focus of my degree at the University of Birmingham. I have also taken every ABRSM graded music theory exam (1 through 8) and enjoy working with students within this framework. I have lots of experience of online tutoring, doing it throughout my degree (during covid) and beyond, and enjoy working with students of all different abilities. I have experience across multiple GCSE and A-Level exam boards, as well as creating bespoke schemes of work to suit the student. Read my 'About the Lessons' section to understand a little bit more about my teaching approach!
Do get in touch if you have any questions, or think I can help you on your musical journey.

I like to take an individualised approach to students learning, as often even within formal qualifications (GCSEs/A-Levels) people have difference musical approaches. Throughout my extensive experience of online tutoring over a number of years, I've worked across multiple different exam boards alongside creative bespoke schemes of work based around a students needs. My responsibility lies in helping a student to identify and understand areas of the subject where they currently have limited knowledge and I feel it's important that sessions feel like a collaboration of ideas as opposed to just a mindless fact dump. A lot of my sessions are orientated around an exam question, and how we go about planing the question together. I'm also happy to mark any questions and give my feedback for students to improve on. Every student is different, and it's important that our session works for them but having had experience of multiple tutors in the run-up to my exams, I know that it's important to be able to talk confidently about areas of a topic which can then be translated into better written communication. My main indicator of progress is whether or not a student can talk correctly about a subject area and think around a question when challenged but ultimately, the learning has to come from the student and I'm there to facilitate that as much as possible.
