About Simon

I have over twenty years of experience teaching Mathematics, working successfully with students aged 10 to 17 from a wide range of backgrounds and abilities. Throughout my career, I have consistently been recognised as an excellent classroom practitioner, known for achieving strong results while building students’ confidence and enjoyment of the subject.

In addition to my classroom teaching, I am a Local Leader of Maths Education with the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM). In this role, I support and advise maths teachers across other schools, helping to improve teaching practice and outcomes more widely. This reflects both my expertise and the high regard in which my teaching is held.

Alongside this, I have over ten years of experience tutoring both individuals and small groups, with a strong track record of helping students make significant progress and achieve their goals.

I also work as a GCSE examiner, marking papers each summer. This gives me a detailed understanding of how marks are awarded, the common mistakes students make, and what examiners are really looking for. I use this insight to teach effective exam techniques, helping students to avoid pitfalls and gain every mark they deserve.

About the lesson

My teaching approach is flexible and tailored to the individual needs of each student. I use a wide range of methods to ensure that concepts are understood clearly, adapting my explanations to suit different learning styles. Where helpful, I use diagrams, models, and visual representations to bring mathematical ideas to life and make more abstract topics easier to grasp.

I also place strong emphasis on helping students see the bigger picture. By making connections across different areas of the curriculum, revisiting prior knowledge, and introducing ideas they will encounter in the future, I help students develop a deeper and more coherent understanding of mathematics. This approach allows learners to see how topics fit together, rather than viewing them in isolation.

Each student receives a bespoke programme of study, carefully planned to match their individual needs, strengths, and areas for development. My aim is to provide the right level of challenge while ensuring steady progress. By the end of every session, students leave with a clear sense of achievement and increased confidence in their abilities.

Simon is a fantastic maths Tutor – he really helped my son prepare for his GCSE’s, and undoubtedly helped him maximise his grade potential. Simon was patient, diligent and encouraging. His depth of knowledge of the subject enabled him to clearly explain the basic principles and then build on these with ever increasing complexity - until my son had a thorough grasp of the entire required syllabus. We can’t recommend Simon highly enough and we will certainly be calling on his services again when our daughter faces the daunting task of preparing for her GCSEs!
