About Jos

I'm a Liverpool-based maths tutor offering both online and in-person tuition. I achieved an A at A-Level and began a maths degree before my path took a different direction, but the subject has stayed central to my work ever since. I've been tutoring since 2021, starting with the Tutor Trust in Manchester before moving into private tuition.

In that time every student I've worked with has made significant progress. My proudest result was helping a student who had repeatedly failed their GCSE reach a confident grade 5 standard in under four months; a turnaround that came down to rebuilding their confidence as much as their maths.

Not every student learns the same way, and I take pride in approaching a question from several different angles until I find the one that clicks for them. I specialise in GCSE and the years leading up to it, a stage where the right support can change how a student sees the subject completely. Maths has a reputation for being intimidating, but taught with clarity and patience it builds real confidence. I break complex ideas into manageable steps, connect them to real situations, and want every student to leave a lesson feeling they've genuinely got somewhere.

Whatever someone's starting point, my aim is to give them the tools and confidence to approach any problem methodically.

About the lesson

Maths is the subject students are most likely to decide they "can't do", and almost always, they're wrong. I've seen students go from dreading the subject to genuinely enjoying it, and from repeatedly failing to passing comfortably. That shift is what I teach for.

I specialise in GCSE maths, and also teach students from Year 7 upwards who are building towards it, whether you're preparing for exams, trying to rescue a topic that's never made sense, or starting again from the ground up. Wherever a student begins, my job is to get them somewhere they didn't think they could reach.

Lessons are structured but built around the individual student. I start by finding where the real gaps are, then work at a pace that suits them, with the student solving problems alongside me rather than watching from the sidelines; that's where understanding turns into confidence. I cover all the core GCSE topics and work to whichever exam board a student is sitting.

Most importantly, I teach students how to think their way through a problem they've never seen before, rather than just memorise the ones they have. That's the difference between scraping a grade and owning the subject; and it's a skill that outlasts the exam by a long way.

Perfect! I presented Jos with the challenge of focusing on revision techniques with my son, regardless of the subject, and I am delighted to say that he surpassed my expectations. Whether the subject was Maths, Geography, Religious Studies, or Spanish, Jos guided my son in a variety of techniques to find the answers for himself and work independently in preparation for his exams. Jos is very personable, easy for kids to get along with, always punctual, responds promptly to all communications, and has the flexibility to adapt to the specific needs of the student. Jos really helped with my sons Maths in a few weeks, he picked up quickly where he lacked and was really informative in the lessons and in between session checking in and setting homework. My Son felt a lot more confident going into his GCSEs after lessons with Jos. Jos was also very honest on if he felt he didn’t need extra lessons and said to not waste money if he was capable of achieving a pass mark at that stage. Would use him again.
