About Merel

I am an English Language and Literature teacher with a background in literary and cultural theory, holding an MA in Comparative Literature from the University of Amsterdam. I currently teach IGCSE and IB English Language and Literature, where I design and deliver courses that guide students through a wide range of literary and non-literary texts, genres, and cultural contexts. What I enjoy most about teaching is helping students discover how language works beneath the surface. In my classes, I enjoy placing meticulous emphasis on the form of literature. We dissect how aspects such as word choice, structure, or silence, shape meaning, emotion, and thought. Literature, for me, is not only something to be analysed, but something that interacts with the way we see ourselves and the world around us. I love guiding students in understanding how literature tickles our brains, and help them articulate complex ideas with clarity and confidence. Building trusting relationships with students is central to my approach; when students feel seen and supported, they become more willing to take intellectual risks and speak thoughtfully about demanding ideas. Ultimately, I teach because I believe language gives us the tools to better understand ourselves, others, and the societies we live in. Helping students develop those tools is what makes teaching rewarding for me.

About the lesson

I am an experienced IB and IGCSE English Language and Literature teacher with an MA in Comparative Literature from the University of Amsterdam. My teaching focuses on helping students become confident analysts of both literary and non-literary texts. Additionally, I can adapt my classes closely to the curriculum you are studying at school, while making sure you are meeting the course standards for IB, IGCSE, or IMYC. For IB English Language and Literature, I support students step by step with textual analysis, HL essay preparation, and Internal Assessments. My lessons are structured, analytical, and tailored to each student’s needs. I take you by the hand and help you understand not just what to write, but how and why you should be writing it. For IGCSE English Language and Literature, I guide students through poetry, prose, and drama, helping them develop sensitivity to language, authorial choice, and effect. I support close reading, written analysis, and creative and transactional writing, while strengthening critical thinking and communication skills. My aim is for students to become not only interpreters of meaning, but confident creators of it.
