About Dr Jojo

Hi, I’m Jojo, a passionate historian and experienced researcher with a BA (Hons), Master’s and PhD in History. My academic career has focused particularly on British history, with my PhD research exploring female friendship in eighteenth-century England.

I have always loved history and enjoy helping others discover what makes the subject so fascinating. I believe history is much more than memorising dates and names; it is about understanding people, their experiences and the reasons behind the events that shaped the world around us.

I want to tutor because I know that history can sometimes feel overwhelming, particularly when students are faced with large amounts of content or are unsure how to approach exam questions and essays. I want to help make the subject feel more manageable, interesting and enjoyable, while giving students the confidence to develop and express their own historical arguments.

As someone who has progressed through GCSE, A-Level, undergraduate, Master's and doctoral-level history, I understand the different challenges students face at each stage. I can therefore offer not only subject knowledge, but also practical guidance on essay writing, analysing sources, revision and preparing for exams.

Whether you are struggling with a particular topic, looking to improve your grades or simply want to become more confident in History, I would love to help you reach your potential.

About the lesson

I believe history is most enjoyable when students understand the story behind the events, rather than simply memorising dates and facts. My approach is friendly, supportive and tailored to each student’s individual needs, whether they need help building confidence, preparing for exams or developing stronger analytical and essay-writing skills.

I use a mixture of discussion, questioning, source analysis, essay planning and exam-style questions to make lessons engaging and interactive. I encourage students to explain their ideas and develop their own arguments, while helping them understand how to structure a strong historical response and use evidence effectively. I can also adapt lessons to suit different learning styles and areas where a student may be struggling.

Lessons are typically 60 minutes long, although I can be flexible depending on the student's age, level and requirements.

I hold a BA (Hons), Master's and PhD in History, specialising in early modern British history. My academic research has focused particularly on eighteenth-century women, friendship and relationships, and I have extensive experience researching, analysing and communicating historical sources. I am also experienced in explaining complex historical ideas clearly and making them accessible to others.

I offer tutoring for GCSE and A-Level History and am happy to work with students of different abilities, from those who are struggling with a particular topic to those looking to achieve the highest grades. My aim is to help students become more confident, independent historians while making history genuinely interesting along the way.
