About Nadezda

"I am from an old brown piano, from pancakes in the morning and hot milk with honey in the evening. I am from "Don't leave the yard" and "When will you practice your scales?" I am from birch trees whose beautiful leaves whisper in the wind". I created this piece inspired by George Ella Lyon's "Where I am from" poem.
As an ESL/EFL educator with 10+ years of experience, I'm excited to apply my skills and experiences to teaching online. During the COVID-19 pandemic my students and I pivoted from face-to-face engagement to online environments, both in a synchronous and asynchronous format. What I learned from this experience is that creating a virtual space that engages learners in sustained, meaningful learning tasks is a must. That is why my online assessment strategies include interactive Kahoot! quizzes, Flip vlogs, discussions, and activities, that reduce boredom and increase interaction with course materials. When teaching on Zoom, I switch back and forth between different types of teaching methods (e.g., lecture, small group discussion) and provide students with an opportunity for practice and feedback using the Zoom polling feature. I am going to use my expertise in online teaching and educational technology to make my classes fun, engaging, and effective.

About the lesson

I use communicative approach in teaching. I leave students plenty of time to practice. A typical lesson will start with an ice-breaker, then I will either explain a new material or students will complete several listening or reading tasks. If I teach a group of students, I ask them to split into smaller groups of two and share their answers or ideas. In a 50-minute class, there are at least two think-pair shares. At the end of the class, students play a game, for a example, a Kahoot! I use gamification elements to make classes fun. I mostly teach college-age ESL learners who would like to learn about everyday cultural topics, participate in discussions, and do a variety of activities. Some of students' favorite topics are American idioms originated in sports, or Bible. I also teach strategies how to identify and comprehend American humor.
