About Alia
I hold two Master’s degrees in Aesthetics Theory and Urban Studies from Sorbonne University and Nanterre University, and have also pursued practice-based art programs in performance and film, all of which have given me a strong familiarity with multidisciplinary art curricula and practices. I have 15 years of university teaching experience in art history and art theory in both English- and French-speaking academic contexts in Beirut and Paris, as well as experience delivering artist talks in institutions such as NYU, Mucem, and other art spaces. This background equips me with a strong academic foundation, solid methods, and the flexibility to adapt to different student profiles and learning needs. I teach equally in English and in French.
Above all, I am passionate about teaching and committed to offering attentive, thoughtful support so that each student can progress with confidence and achieve their academic or personal objectives.

My teaching focuses on helping students thoughtfully read artworks by connecting formal elements—such as color, line, figure, background, and composition—with the ideas, contexts, and questions that shape them. I follow a contextual and problem-oriented approach that makes art history both accessible and rigorous. This approach emphasizes the creative dimension of art, how meaning is mediated through visual and plastic forms, and how these forms open onto broader existential, social, and political concerns that we all share.
Over 15 years of teaching, alongside my artistic practice in performance and video, I have taught courses in modern and contemporary art, dance and performance history and theory, and cinema history and theory, and have also given talks on decolonial artistic practices, with a particular focus on Palestinian cinema. This experience allows me to design structured and effective courses that highlight interdisciplinary connections across artistic fields.
With a clear conceptual framework, I guide students in understanding how artists think and produce, interpreting artworks and aesthetic concepts in relation to political contexts, mapping art trends and movements, and building a solid knowledge of art history that supports academic work and can inform artistic practice.

I had the privilege of being taught by Alia during my fourth year of architecture, where she led two separate courses that bridged philosophy, cinema, art, and architecture, truly opening our horizons and expanding the way we think. Miss Alia Hamdan is the kind of professor who pushes her students to go far beyond simple written work, encouraging them to connect complex ideas and ideologies while reaching deeper layers of understanding. I highly recommend Alia Hamdan as a tutor to anyone curious and eager to learn and grow; even today, years after completing my Master’s degree in architectural design, I continue to seek out intellectual mentors like her who inspire me, elevate my thinking, and keep me sharp. If I ever had the opportunity to take another course with her, I would do so without hesitation.
Alia is an exceptional and highly committed teacher whose impact extends well beyond the classroom.
Alia was my university teacher and thesis advisor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Beirut. I worked with her one to one during my thesis, where she supported me in structuring my work, adopting a critical posture, and articulating complex ideas about art and politics. Her rigorous guidance pushed me to engage seriously with both the conceptual and practical dimensions of art. I would not have been able to write my thesis without her guidance.
In her class, one learns how to make and think art in a way that is attentive to both context and form. This mode of thinking continues to inform my practice today.
Whether you need support with writing art history essays, want to take a course on art, or seek advice on your artistic projects, I highly recommend her!See more recommendations
