About Shaily

I am a qualified teacher (QTS) with a background in Architecture (B.Arch.) and extensive experience teaching and tutoring GCSE, A-Level Maths. My academic and professional journey has given me a strong foundation in logical thinking, problem-solving, and clear communication — skills that are essential for success in Maths.

I chose to teach because I genuinely enjoy helping students understand topics they once found difficult and watching their confidence grow. Many students come to me feeling unsure or anxious about Maths; my role is to help them feel supported, capable, and in control of their learning.

I am known for being patient, calm, and approachable, and I take time to understand how each student learns best. I believe that with the right guidance and encouragement, every student can make progress — whether the goal is to build confidence, close gaps in understanding, or aim for higher grades.

Parents can be assured that I teach in a structured, professional, and supportive manner, with a clear focus on the GCSE, A-Level curriculum and exam expectations. I take pride in being reliable, well-prepared, and committed to each student’s success.

If you’re looking for a qualified tutor who combines subject expertise with a supportive teaching style, I would be very happy to help.

My teaching approach is clear, structured, and confidence-building, designed specifically for GCSE, A-Level Maths students who want to improve understanding, performance, and exam results.

Each lesson is carefully planned around the GCSE, A-Level curriculum and tailored to the individual student. I focus on building strong foundations first, then developing problem-solving skills and exam technique, so students feel prepared and in control.

A typical lesson includes:

— A short review of previous topics to reinforce learning

— Clear, step-by-step explanations using visual methods

— Guided practice to build confidence before working independently

— Exam-style questions to apply learning and improve accuracy

— Constructive feedback and clear next steps

I adapt my teaching to suit different learning styles and paces, ensuring students are never rushed or left confused. Lessons are supportive and encouraging, helping students overcome maths anxiety and gain confidence in their abilities.

As a qualified teacher with proven experience supporting GCSE and A-level students, I understand how exams are marked and what students need to succeed. Parents are kept informed of progress, strengths, and areas for improvement.

My goal is not just to help students pass exams, but to help them understand Maths, build confidence, and achieve their full potential.

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I’ve always enjoyed Maths, especially problem-solving and logical thinking, which is what led me to study Architecture. Over time, I realised that I didn’t just enjoy using Maths — I also truly enjoyed helping others understand it.
My interest in private tutoring grew when I started working with GCSE and A-level students one-to-one. I could see how much difference personalised support made, especially for students who felt stuck or lacked confidence in class.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach GCSE and A-level Maths and enjoy helping students make sense of topics that often feel confusing at first. I particularly like teaching algebra, calculus, trigonometry, and problem-solving, as these areas really help students see how everything fits together.
Some topics can feel challenging or repetitive at times, but I focus on breaking them down clearly and making them more manageable, so students don’t feel overwhelmed.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes — the teachers who inspired me most were patient, calm, and genuinely wanted students to understand, not just memorise. They explained things in different ways and never made students feel bad for asking questions.
That’s something I try to bring into my own teaching.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I think a good tutor needs to be patient, approachable, and able to explain things clearly. Everyone learns differently, so it’s important to adapt explanations and pace to suit the student.
Building confidence is just as important as teaching content, especially in Maths.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I’ve taught many students at GCSE and A-level who initially felt they were “bad at Maths”. Once we worked through topics step by step and filled in the gaps, their confidence grew and their results improved.
Seeing students realise they can do Maths is one of the most rewarding parts of tutoring.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Like many students, I found Maths challenging at times when topics weren’t explained clearly or when lessons moved too fast. That’s why I’m very aware of how frustrating Maths can feel when things don’t click straight away.
That experience helps me support students who feel stuck or discouraged.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My main passion is teaching and helping students feel more confident in Maths. I really enjoy seeing students move from feeling unsure to feeling capable and independent.
I also enjoy helping GCSE, A-level students develop stronger problem-solving and exam skills.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

I’m a QTS-qualified teacher with experience teaching and tutoring GCSE and A-level Maths, and I genuinely care about my students’ progress.
I’m patient, well-prepared, and I take time to explain things clearly. My aim is always to help students understand Maths better and feel more confident in their ability.
